Has anyone ever tried to steal your older diesel?

Just wondering.

I read an article that says the most stolen car is something like a 90's Honda Accord.

I got mine cheaply because someone stole parts from it. Does that count?

Had the gunsite stolen a few times.

Otherwise I live in hope. The classic insurance that would be paid is likely a lot more than the car could fetch! But maybe not once I get the rust repairs done

no, but......

I've owned a few old diesel Mercedes that I wish someone would have stolen. And it wasn't to collect insurance either; just to get rid of the things.

I would assume that old diesels, well diesels in general are stolen less per 1000 diesel vehicles vs the number for gasoline vehicles. Most people don't know how to start a modern diesel in the first place. The average person wouldn't know you have to let the glow plugs heat up before you can start the engine. Throw in a manual transmission and thieves are even more confused. W115 240D with a gorilla knob and a manual transmission would be a tough one for a thief to figure out.

Around here if you own anything remotely sporty in a VW or a Honda you have to nail it to the driveway. Apart from that it's hit and miss. I know one guy who had his old Plymouth Voyager stolen... TWICE. I wonder if that was a thief who needed to transport bulky stolen goods.

I don't even bother to lock my doors unless I leave my mobile, or something else of value, in view in the car.

I know someone tried to steal my 240D at some point in the late 80's or early 90's but there was no lasting damage other than a broken clip on the under dash panel.

Years ago, my 68 200D was parked in my mechanic's lot while the engine was being overhauled. Any fool could see that the engine was out of it. The front end was sitting about 8 inches higher than the rear, plus there were hoses and wires hanging out the bottom of the engine compartment. Some moron broke into it and tried to punch out the key switch.

I leave the doors unlocked so they won't have to break the window. Radio needs changing from the current cassette deck so I may have to re-think.

similar thing happened to me, parts car in my driveway, no engine, keys in the ignition, no fenders, ect. Watched some kids jump in and try to start it from my kitchen window. was pretty funny.

Never a full auto theft but in the mid 80's I lost track of the radios stolen out of two of them. It was at least 10. That included breaking the driver's window and need to replace the upper center console. I watched one guy from my third story window pop the driver's window with a screwdriver in the door frame, lean in, jerk the ashtray and reach behind the radio and pull it out, breaking the console in the process. Took him less than 10 seconds and he was gone before anything could be done. This was quite common in Los Angeles in those times. One car was a W126 and the other the W201 I still have.
