Question 90 350 SDL vs 94 S350D engine and tranny

just curious I see the engine and tranny numbers similar. What is the difference. Could I put a 94/95 engine and tranny in my 90 when the time comes to replace--- well, assuming I live that long

As far as I know, they are interchangeable, but never actually attempted a trans swap from a W140 to a W126. I've swapped 86/87 production model 722.*** transmissions from 300SDL's back and forth between 3.0L and 3.5L engines, and they work well (minor shift point related differences, Sixto can speak more to the exact details). Also, those cars are much more plentiful in scrap yards. If you dont find any good transmissions in the next month, I have one known good unit left over from a 1987 300SDL I used for a few years testing out engines in the same body. Since we've already dealt with each other, I'd be happy to take a considerable amount off the asking price. You'd want to make sure your converter is not contaminated. You can install my converter with the unit I have, but yours is matched your injector pump. Some say it matters a bit, but in the swaps I've done between 3.0L's and 3.5L's, I've kept the donor converter with the donor transmission. The difference has been negligible.

Anyway, between work and vacation, I will be gone for a month returning on Christmas week. I dont mind heading your way again to bring the unit to you. I may make a day of it and hit the PAP yards in Winston Salem and Charlotte while I'm there.

You've got my contact info if you end up needing it, but hopefully you'll get it all sorted out.

Take care. Hope you find a good trans.
