Intermittent no glow - '85 300d

Last week or so on cold starts the glow relay isn't engaging on the first try. Always comes to life if I turn the key back to O then try again.

I did find an old post by Kerry where he talked about a similar problem and he opened up the relay and cleaned the contacts.

Is this the best/usual course of action?

Kerry, if you read this, did the cleaning make any difference on the '84 SD?

How do you know this?

What is the symptom?

No glow light.

No preheat (motor starts very hard).

The issue with no glow light can be a couple of plugs that are not working. I would check that first prior to condemning the relay as intermittent.

Relays don't usually fail to work one minute and then magically work in the next attempt.

Glowplugs were new a few weeks ago.

I agree on the observation on the relay, in the past they have either worked or not, but I did find the post where Kerry had the same issue on his daughter's car. He opened up the relay and cleaned the contacts, which initially fixed it, but the issue came back soon after.

If I return the key to KPO and retry it glows normally and starts flawlessly.

Anything is possible, but, if it were me, I'd recheck the glow plugs.

Cleaning the contacts did extend the period between failures to connect but not significantly. I ended up replacing the relay.
