Injektor State of Tune:
 
Any comments on long-term testing of injektors to determine a service interval recommendation????

I set/balanced my injektors personally in 1997 or 1998, when I had access to the test stand, dialing in each one to 2000 psi, whic is easier to reach than 1968psi, IMHO.

Now, 68,000 miles later, I am considering having them reset as part of an improved maintenance program.

Thoughts????????????

maybe build your own pop tester? i bought a chinese clone bosch one from Holland a few years back for around $150 shipped. the shims can be had in a 100 piece set from a guy in germany for about $50 shipped

I am evolving...

I sold my 413 CID 1975 Firebird Ram Air/4-Speed car and replaced it with a supercharged 2001 Mustang GT.

I am slowly moving into more modern cars and although my wife is adamant that we keep the W116, I am slowly phasing it out as well in favor of a BMW 850csi, so I don't foresee the need to amass more stuff in the garage for the 617....

As I get older I am starting to appreciate the quieter gasoline engine more and more...

lol; i'm unevolving...moving from a 2002 subaru H6 to a 1991 420SEL and now down to a 83 300SD

Nothing wrong with that.

I think that driving old cars for a quarter of a century has given me a renewed appreciation for something a bit more modern, plus I am a die-hard V-12 fan from my Ferrari/Lamborghini days....so the 850csi is perfect for me and afford me the ability to buy my wife a nicer, newer vehicle...

Admit it, the only reason you want a 850csi are the pop up headlights! :D

I do love the styling of the E-31, most certainly, but I have grown to love the BMW V-12 after working with it.

I miss my Lamborghini Miura that I sold in 1998. I cannot touch one now for what I paid for it back then, so the 850csi gives me attractive styling, a V-12 and a manual transmission!!!!

yeah i know, and i love the 300SD. i usually get a different car every year (or earlier) because i get bored with them, but i've been driving the SD for 1 1/2 now and i'm still not bored with it. The 420SEL was ok but there's just something about the diesels...

I have both loved and hated my W116, but over the span of about 20 years, and for the past 4, relying on it daily, I have grown to respect it....

Also when taken to a large local BMW dealer they recommend a dealer 250 miles away to work on it as they were just not completely comfortable working on them. As I recall the quote was "we break as much as we repair so we would prefer you go else where!!!

He admitted they would often trailer an important client's 850 the 250 miles for free just to keep the rest of his business.

They still turn my head, all friends and family have my permission to slap me if I even begin to think about another 850.

I first gained experience with the BMW V-12 in 1996. I liked them immediately and became the guy who people brought them to for service.

I have changed only a couple of broken headbolts, but never from fatigue; always from someone replacing a head gasket.

I had a shop strip ALL the head bolt holes in a 450SEL and I installed a full set of Time-Serts in that; way more trouble than the BMW V-12 ever gave me.

By the way, the head bolts, much like those on the 617, were redesigned in the engine's later variants.

Doing the work yourself allows me to drive pretty much whatever I want; limited only then by income...

Tighten your head bolts 1/32 or so a turn and then pop them free. Ive never broken a head bolt doing so.
