Ticking at the front of my 617 engine when cold

I heard a ticking noise from the front of my engine this morning when I stepped out of the car to load some things in the trunk. I wouldn't have heard the sound if I had remained in the car. I drove the car for about a mile and the noise went away. After a 10 minute drive I popped the hood and everything sounded perfect, as usual.

My first thought when hearing the noise was that my vacuum pump was on the way out. Wouldn't the noise still persist if that were the case? It doesn't sound loud enough to be an injector nailing, but I've only heard 616's nail. There really isn't any rhythm to the sound, and it goes away when I rev the engine a little bit. I have a spare vacuum pump, and I'm tempted to install it just to be safe. Is this an easy bolt off/ bolt back on job? It looks like it. Thanks

Search on vacuum pump failures

I am certainly no expert on that noise you heard, but do a search on vacuum pump failures. There is a lot to read about them. Depending on the miles on your engine, you might want to replace yours just in case.

Cruise control can make a clicking sound. Put your hand on it to see if you can feel the clicking.

Get a Mechanics Stethoscope or a piece of Broom stick and put it against what you want to listen to and your Ear on the other end.

Fuel line works well, too -- I always have some lying around, so that's what I use.

OK. That will work for things that are close to you. An old stiff hose would work better for a longer distance.

I have one but actually don't like using a Mechanics Stethoscope. I find the Noise is too loud.

Also wihout modification you have to get Your Face too close to stuff. 35 Years ago I burned My cheek on a hot Exhaust Manifold trying to get cloes enough listen to something with a Stethoscope.
And, if the Stethoscope happend to get caught in moving parts it is stuck in your Ears!

So I normally use a 3-4 foot piece of Broom Stick. It also can be stuck down beteen places that other stuff will not reach.
