Before the switch to the knuckle style couplers, part of a brakeman's job was to drop a pin into a hole in the old-style link and pin couplers as two sections of train were being joined. If his timing was off, and the pin didn't make it through the hole in both couplers, the two sections of train would crush him. This was probably the most dangerous job a brakeman had to do, and led to many deaths. The safer knuckle coupling method came in to use in the 1870s.
