Mazda6 Diesel coming to the US!
Here is a link to WSJ article on the car -- it debuted at the LA Auto Show yesterday! Mazda will start selling it in 2014 *correction: in mid-2013*, and, converting from UK MPG to US MPG, it should beat out the Prius by a couple MPG. I can't wait 'til the auto show comes to Boston!

Let's hope it puts pressure on the other Japanese car makers to bring their diesels to the USA.

A Class leading sedans mpg SHOULD BE 30 city 38 hwy ,with a 6 spd standard diesel its only improving Mazdas reputation for thinking outside of the box.

Other companies have diesel cars they aren't allowed to import because they are too efficient, which means less money will be going into the pockets of big oil, American auto manufacturers, and the politicians. This is great, hopefully America will realise the government is the one preventing them from having a super efficient car when they start seeing these on the road

I really hope they show. At the same time it might be foolish to bank on it,

Seems to me that the main barriers to importation of Japanese small diesel cars are cultural. Americans have little feeling for diesels in cars and the people who love them are typically consigned to ghettos like this one. Manufacturers, instead of pushing the cultural edge, seem resigned to accepting this reality instead of actively working to change it. If I were marketing manager for Honda, Toyota or Mazda, I'd be signing up some hot young female Hollywood stars to promote my diesels.

There is an import duty on trucks and vans I think. That's why Sprinters were imported as 'parts' after being disassembled in Europe and then reassembled in the USA. It's why Subura put seats in the bed of its 'Brat'. But I'm not aware of any restrictions on the kinds of engines importable in cars.

North American emissions are stringent when it comes to diesels. That may be something keeping ultra efficient diesels from the U.S. The new VW TDI's have post combustion injection to burn off nitrous oxides and other emissions when the fuel & exhaust gasses hit a catalytic converter like exhaust contraption. Hurts fuel economy for the sake of emissions. So some diesels, even if the manufacturer wanted to bring them to the U.S. would have to be reworked for better emimssions, which might make them less efficient, thus loosing some apeal.

Dang another efficient but complex new car. Maybe in 20 years I will be needing a replacement. I will be 81 by then. Lets hope my mechanical skills hold out.

It was reported a couple of years ago that Honda would have a diesel Accord in the pipeline for North America for 2013, but I haven't seen anything recent.
Given the flop of the current Civic, I think all their resources are currently devoted to pushing a new generation of that platform out the door early. In any case, I would be at the Honda dealer long before I would splash out for anything made by Mazda.
