Any feedback on teh 2007 or 2008 Benz CDI?

My 81 SD is running fine, but I am looking at something newer.
Anyone here had experience with a later model CDI? I read that the 2005/06 have and expensive brake issue going.
Anything like that out there with the 07 or 08?

05 and 06 have the inline 6 CDI motor. 07 and 08 have the Bluetec V6. So, technically, there is no 07 or 08 CDI.

As far as my 05, I love it. Working on the brakes is no big deal, just disconnect the SBC computer first and reconnect when you're done.

So what is with the stories of a $10k brake repair on the 05? Is that not true?

I've replaced a caliper when the slide bolt froze up...along with rotors and pads. Maybe cost $200 total, I don't recall.

The brakes have a self-test function, which occurs when doors are opened or other seemingly random times, so disconnecting the calipers when the computer is still enabled may be hazardous, but it takes about 5 seconds to disconnect the SBC brake computer.

I have 194k mi on mine, 64k by me. I paid $700 for the dealer to fix a wire in the airbag circuit (that I didn't want to tackle myself). Otherwise my repairs have all been DIY, maybe totalling $2k.

The fuel filter on the Bluetec v6 is alot more pia to change than on the inline 6 in my opinion. One negative in regards to the SBC is the cost of the module if/when it goes out.

My wife's 2008

is dead nuts reliable. We have never had a repair since new, only preventive maintenance.

I do not like the car though. It is overcomplicated and not remotely DIY capable except for the most basic of fluid changes and such. Even then you have to go through a maintenance reminder reset procedure. I can read a calendar and an odometer Dammit.

Appointments are impeccable except for the Command system. Hard to operate and any $100 Garmin is a much better Nav system. The Command system comes with an operator's manual thicker than the car's owner manual.

It is a great distance cruiser but I still prefer my W123.

I like everything about my 09 Bluetec.

Fuel filter is about a 20 minute job; it is kinda buried.

GP's aren't too hard to get to; you just have to hunt for them for a while. Not certain if I've even seen an inj yet. It is a crowded engine compartment for sure.

If you are stuck in the W123/124 world and believe a 606.962 diesel is overwhelming and too electrically complicated, do yourself a favor and just leave the Buetecs hood closed and dont look lest you have a nervous breakdown.
