I guess no one remembers all the early '80's diesels due to oil price increases from Carter's oil embargo; everyone had diesel motor options:

Chevy Chevette diesel
Ford Escort (Mazda diesel motor)
Ford Ranger (Mazda disel motor)
Lincoln Continental (BMW 524TD motor)
Mitsubishi/Nissan/Toyota all had their own diesel motors in their small pickups.

I'm sure there are some I missed, but this was all a result of the market driving diesel sales. This was also the same era when our cars were originally sold.

I do agree things are different now, especially with the complicated emission control systems.
