Broke the 30 mpg Barrier Today:

Recently swapped in a set of unknown, Pik-N-Pull 135 bar injektors, to replace my 68,000 mile units (set to 2100 psi by me in 1998) so I could send them out to Greazzer for refurbishing.

The unknown units produced much more noise at idle, but definitely ran smoother and didn't seem to give up any power.

Since I commute 220 miles a day (round trip) to work, I notice little things about the car right away and my gut feeling was it was taking less fuel to make my usual trip.

When I checked the first tankful of fuel I netted 30.1 mpg, up from my previous best of 28 mpg.

I will keep you all posted over the next few tanks....

Assuming you drive the same. Either the spray pattern is better or perhaps what was being discussed about switching the alda in and out of the circuit might show something.

The nozzles might be smaller on the substitute injectors as well. Although you gained a perhaps minor timing advance with them. Also I suppose you might have gotten a better overall power balance with the used set. We static test injectors in comparison to the dynamics at operational speeds. There may be differences.

Could be. If you refer to my thread about injektors, you will notice the Bosch nozzles that were in the car had an extended top, squared on the end like a section of tubing, and the Bosch nozzles I swapped in had a rounded profile....

Rounded used injektor (left) and 68,000 mile injektor (right) both nozzles marked BOSCH.

That is great mileage for you land boat.
I got my best mileage the other day 32.7, It is my personal best with this car. I drove it by the boost gauge, never (almost never) going above 5. About 60 mph. It was windy too.
Obviously driving 60 would not work for your California life style. But here in Mo life is different. I let plenty of people pass me then turn off in a 1/4 mile. That makes me laugh to no end.

What is my goal on my benz. Probably shooting for 40 mpg. My car now pulls good at low rpm. 1800 to 2500 is the sweet spot for economy. Tall gears are the way to go.

My injectors are headed out to greazzer too. Let's hope that he doesn't do anything to make them flow more just better.

30mpg is not going to make your commute any cheaper. It would be 7.3 gal or about $30+ a day.

$150 per wk, $600 per month. That is a lot of after tax money.

Interesting analysis. I try and take my VW when mileage is important, well more important than safety and comfort.

I get over 50 with the vw. Paid less than 2000 for the car. Very little maintenance so far. Of course no one thinks (my god he has a mercedes syndrome) Now that is important

I'm quite fond of the 116s, congrats.

My 126 returned similar numbers, the odo broke, so can't check anymore.

Checked mileage today at 1/2 tank indicated. Stayed away from my usual practice of WOT when getting on the freeway and kept my RPM's under 3,000 in an effort to simulate the effect of the upcoming 2.47:1 axle swap. Been keeping rpm's below 2700 (65mph with 3.07:1 axle and 215/70R14 tires = 2614 rpm) during highway cruising.

My 220 mile daily commute begins at 4,200 ft/asl and descends through the high desert to my 475 ft/asl destination, a drop of 3.725 ft/asl in elevation, with a 3.725 ft/asl climb on the return trip.

In consideration of the fact I drive the car over 1,000 miles a week, I could immediately tell the fuel economy was better, just by feel, but I wanted to confirm the numbers.

When filling the tank, I always fill to the top of the neck until no more fuel can be introduced. This 1/2 tank reflacts 100% highway driving with no idling or in-town trips. While checking at 1/2 tank may or may not be considered accurate, here are the numbers:

300 miles driven at 1/2 tank indicated - 9.165 gallons consumed - 32.7330 mpg

Now, with the 2.47:1 axle, 65mph will only be 2108 rpm, so I will be able to increase my speed to 80mph (a more freeway friendly speed out here in California) and be turning 2600 rpm, so I don't know if the mileage will increase from the swap, but I can drive faster at the same rpm, which is great, since I am practically run over by Big Rigs & Mini Coopers while driving 65mph out here.

I will check mileage again when this tank is totally depleted and report my findings...
