1978 300d, 617 engine and tranny swap question

I'm removing a 78 617 na engine and tranny for a friend. I'm installing a 83 617, turbo and tranny. Was preparing for the removal and noticed on the 78 tranny, the electrical connector is rectangle shaped. All I've seen on the w123, w126 cars are the round conector.
Anybody got a suggestion as what the best solution is going to be?
Thanks.

I assume you're referring to the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch). If so, I had the same problem on my swap of a 617 engine with a 722.4 transmission into a 380SL that originally came with a 722.3 transmission. The NSS were different so they needed to be adapted. The one on the donor transmission was a rectangular type and the one on the target chassis was the round type. One way is to just splice a new connector onto the harness, but I wanted to be able to go back easily if need be. The solution was to make a pigtail that would go from one connector to the other. You'll need a NSS the same as the original chassis transmission. You can get one at the junk yard, and then just wire the connector to create your adapter, as shown below. Yours will be different, but the principle is the same.

Super; thanks for the pictorial. What I had anticipated was removing each "pin" out of the connector and placing it in the donor (round) connector.
Thanks again.

That would probably work too.

My solution was to grab the transmission harness from the donor car, leaving me able to make the spliced junctions inside of the car. On the later 300D versions with the round connector, the entire harness seems to unplug on all of them inside of the car on the driver side of the lower dash right where the console and dash meet.

Adapting a harness was never an option for me, or I would have considered it. My original rectangular connector was shattered, and since I the driveline update was a permanent change, I felt comfortable cutting the original harness in order to splice the later pigtail in place.
