87 300td brake performance boost?

Can I add steel braided lines or different pads, something to make these brakes a bit more sporting? They are a bit mushy and not all that confidence inspiring. Thanks in advance

if your brakes are mushy, something is wrong.
all of mine are ROCK solid brakes, and they are all stock except for one of my wagons, I upgraded the rear to vented rotors...
I have two sets of 4 piston brakes to install, but I've not gotten around to it.
mushy usually means air. get a good flush kit and clear out the system with fresh fluid.
then check all the hoses, if any look cracked, change them all.

x2

Of course it should go without saying, but I will say it anyway, get a very good bleed on the system with new fluid if you have not already.

Well I JUST had the brakes flushed/bled and the hoses are all in good shape. I think I'm just a bit jaded coming from my last car which was an E30 BMW with a Corvette brake kit that was ridiculously effective at slowing the small car down. I'm not expecting that sort of performance but I thought if there was an upgrade to be had (by way of 500sl brakes maybe) or something to firm up the pedal I'd look into it. Perhaps I'll bring it to a guy who works on them locally and ask him to drive it and see if they feel normal to him.

Thanks guys.

I still think you have something wrong in the system. Either an air pocket or the seals in the master cylinder are going bad. Mushy pedal is not a good thing.

I agree that you have to get the original system in good shape before deciding on modifications to it. Although I also understand it may never be close to what you had brakewise on that other car. Did you check the amount and level of vaccum you are producing?

If the vacuum check valve is bad... what can that manifest itself as ?

My 300D 2.5's brakes are nice and sport/firm/solid feeling. Stock except for stainless steel brake lines (only $85!)

My 190E's feel like ****.

if you feel a mushy feeling, it's NOT normal.
the pedal should be firm, and the stopping should be rapid.

there ARE brake upgrades available.
the 94/95 gasser E series brakes are 4 piston instead of 2. you have to change over the lower control arms as well as the calipers. I snagged a set from a 94 in a junk yard. I took the entire assembly from the cars. springs and all.
