ACTUALLY, it doesn't.

the water pump gives flow to the hot water in the engine into the top of the radiator, and the radiator removes heat from it, so the cooled water is following gravity through the radiator...

So, the coolant leaves the bottom of the radiator and is delivered to the top, but it is never affected by gravitational acceleration. Continuous downhill flow in a closed circuit. Amazing!!!

gravity affects all, of course, and certainly there is some gravity fighting in there, but the cooling action of the radiator combined with the heating action of the motor will cause gravity to assist the flow by heating.
the pulling of the cooled water pushes the heated water into the top of the radiator.
the pump gives it more speed and volume, but technically it's not fighting gravity, since gravity is pulling on the colder denser water and the hotter less dense water rises to the top.

^^ Whats your take on the both ends on one tank radiator, in my old diesel VW, which had a huge 30 inches long radiator the water had to go from right to left then back from left to right. I remember that car having an 89C thermostat and a 450W electric radiator fan. It only kicked on at half speed once in a while. That radiator had enough area to cool the coolant without problems.

When I bought the car someone had rigged a one pipe per tank side to side radiator in it with a chintzy made in PRC cooling fan, and it was always being a PITA - once everything original was in place it worked good, and I didnt even have the ducts that guide air to the radiator.

Thanks!!!
Who knew such a simple thing as a radiator can be so...... complicated.

I wonder what the "dual compartment" is for. Sorry... just had to throw that in there.

In effect... they just did that to facilitate hose routing to one side of the engine and not because of some secret cooling voodoo. makes hose install easier I guess... for the M104 that is.

FWIW most (all?) watercooled VWs have the hot water go in the bottom of the radiator and the cooled water come back to the head from the top hose.

neat. I was unaware of this on vw's... I knew only of the LT1 block that did this.

my diesel VW had it the regular way, cold in from below, hot out at top, the thermostat regulated it like the MB does, it lets cold coolant in.
