87 300D ODO stopped working today, Whats the fix?

Just as the heading says, the odometer stopped turning today, I have noticed in the last recent weeks that sometimes my trip odo would start making a clicking noise and I would push the reset button a time or two and all would be fine and it would start over counting up again, now as of today both the trip and the main ODO stopped working, My speedo works fine though. Has anyone dealt with this issue before?
Thanks for any help!

It's happened to me several times. You've got a small rubbery plastic gear failing. It is not too difficult to replace. There are a few pictorials floating around on how to do it.

Here's where you can get the gears:

Speedometer Gear-Odometer Repair-Odometer Gear

Pricey, I know. You might as well replace all three.

Like stated above, you've got some plastic gears that are failing. The teeth often start breaking off. I've had good luck with the gears from odometergears.com.

Sometimes you just have to push the gear and shaft so it meshes with the other (worm?) gear. Do you see the odo "trying" to move?

When these cars were much newer and this happened, you could file the flats off the one end of the shaft and slide it out to access the gears for clean and lube, then slide the shaft back in and crimp it on the end with vise grips.

Now that the cars have much more age on them, it might very well be that the gears are getting old and brittle.

Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks for the response, yes I have tried fidgeting with the reset button to no avail this time, I think it finally went out.

Thank you all for the quick responses, I will pull out my gauge cluster some time before Christmas and see which gear failed, I havent been putting too many miles on the car since I got my new job driving dump trucks, the yard is only 8-9 miles from my house, so Im not too worried about the ODO being that far off. I guess I could keep an estimated record of miles drove till I fix it but then I wouldnt know how to reset the ODO so...........I guess I will just get it working again as as soon as I have time,
Thanks Again

I hesitate to suggest this, but the trip odo is what used to hang them up. If you remove that transfer gear, the main odo will in all likely hood begin working properly.

So, you are saying that if I remove the little gear making the trip odo spin, that quite possibly the main ODO could start working again.

Upon further research, here you go.
http://store.garagistic.com/ocart/odometer-gears/benz-odometer-repair/mercedes-odometer-repair

$17

Much cheaper, may be worth a shot.

Here you go, says it fits W124s, $9

I'm in the same boat, my trip and odo died. But I can hear a clicking sound from the cluster, I think the gear is stuck
