Is there a likely place for this vacuum leak?

On my 83 240D, the shutoff valve works fine, but ONLY if the drivers door is locked. It works either way: I can lock the door then shut the car off; or I can turn off the key, then lock the door, then the car will shut off. In addition, the central locking system does not work.

Any idea as to likely location of leak?

The unlocking side of the system has a leak.

The yellow/red hose is the unlock and the yellow/green is the lock circuit.

It originates at the master valve in the drivers door and goes out to the pods at all 4 doors, the fuel door, and the trunk.

Time to break out the mighty vac.

I would drive with the doors locked or the locks disconnected until you get it fixed. Constant load on the vacuum pump greatly accelerates its demise.

Thanks.

Let's say, for the sake of simplicity, I just want to remove the door locking from the system. What would I disconnect and plug?

under the hood, there is an octopus connected to the yellow hoses... remove it from the vacuum line, and plug where it was.

Excellent...thanks. Works perfect.

Just out of curiosity, what are the two lines running adjacent to the yellow lines and coming off the same vacuum lead? One's orange and one's yellow/green. Whatever those are, I disconnected downstream from them so they're still intact.

So now shutoff works fine....and I don't really care about the central locking system. But, if I were to troubleshoot it, am I correct to assume it involves removing the drivers door panel?

You can start trouble shooting under the mats. Once you narrow down the leak, you can remove the panel needed.

UMMM actually it is the Yellow/Red for lock, and Yellow/Greem for unlock.

Anyway, read through this thread on running down you vacuum issues. It is all very simple to do.

Green line is for the under dash vac pods for the heat/ac.
Brown lines for the fuel shut off.

My guess is one of your door actuators is leaking.

As Chad mentioned, start by lifting the carpet on the drivers side, and you will see the vac lines, and rubber connectors.

Not trying to be difficult but the picture in the linked post shows green for lock and red for unlock.

Just trying to get this right for the OP.

The definitive answer is to look at the fuel door pod. It only has 1 hose and uses vacuum to lock and a spring to unlock on a 123. Whatever color hose is on the fuel door pod is the "lock" circuit.

OK I stand corrected, I was sure I had read it was red for lock, and I have chased down the leaks in my cars and a few others, and it was red for lock.

Guess Iam just getting old and confused.

So it looks like what I did (just wanting to confirm that this is fine for now) is disconnect the vacuum supply to driver's door (plain yellow) and vacuum reservoir (yellow with grey stripe). Car shuts off fine.

Do I need the vacuum reservoir for anything while the car is running?

I tried ONLY disconnecting the plain yellow line. Not only would the car not shut off with the key, but it wouldn't shut off with the stop lever! That surprised me.

shertex,

The old Performance Parts catalogs from ten years ago had vacuum line diagrams in them. Maybe the Performance Parts people can provide you with these diagrams from an old paper catalog. It's been a long time since I went through it, but as I recall, you start at the drivers door and then go either to the drivers side rear or toward the right doors, then down the line from the right doors, the end of the line is the fuel filler door lock.

Hope this helps.
