Diy oil change cost

I just paid $62 for a filter and 2 gallons of rotella 15-40. This seems a bit steep, and more than I had paid in the previous years.
Is that price typical? What are some cost saving ideas?
Thanks

Either way, you're using diesel rated oil. Jiffy lube doesn't do that.

Also, you're doing it right. Jiffy lube doesn't do that either.

2 gallons of Diesel rated oil = $30 max
1 oil filter = $10 max
2 gallons of fuel = about $-7.50

Not stripping any bolts or the drain plug, Priceless!

I usually pay about $100 for a filter and oil (I use Amsoil synthetic). I believe the engine will last longer and get better fuel economy. Anyway, it's my choice, so no criticism, please.

I use Rotella T6 5W-40 for (among other reasons) better flow in cold start conditions. Between two gallons of that plus a filter kit, I'm out $60-70 each oil change. However, I get the oil and filter that I want, plus the satisfaction of knowing it was done right.

For that price I got Rotella T 15w-40, NOT synthetic. I think I should go back and ask if they have mispriced it.

I expect this has to do with where you bought it. TheDons prices are more what I'm used to, and Rotella is not much more than that where I buy it.

I've always used Delo from habit, but have no problem at all with Rotella. I have thought about switching to Rotella because I can buy it pretty cheap in 10 quart jugs at TSC.

Here in Holland you'd probably pay about 65 euros for 4 litres of good quality oil (I think most of it these days is synthetic) - so for an OM617 you need to buy two 4 litre packs at about 130 euros...

...a Mann filter costs about 10 to 15 euros at the moment.

So that's just under 150 euros but you have a bit of oil left over...

...I buy my motor oil in Germany where it costs about 28 euros for 4 litres of the same synthetic stuff!

I actually switched to the valvoline premium blue stuff and it's $16 a gallon. So an extra $8 for me. The cabriolet took synthetic. I do not miss that price

I buy my filters here for whatever they are going for and the Rotella from Wal-Mart where it is usually around $12 a gallon I think. I hate going to Wal-Mart but I'm also cheap

I used to get any of the 15W40 on sale at the time, it can be rotella, delo or delvac all are great and under 30 - usually 26 at walmart, filters are usually an online thing or napa gold.

My current oil change was free of charge - I got 5 gallons of 50 hr used LE diesel engine oil, settled and centrifuged and pumped through a weird filter setup done by a guy I know. It cleaned up the oil nice. - The engine is very smooth now. - Free as in the guy kept 2 gallons of the oil for his work.

I beleive that mystik or TSC 15W40 is also great for its price.

I watch the autoparts store flyer for when Rotella goes on sale, coincidentally it seems to usually happen a few weeks before I am due for a change anyway. If memory serves it's $9 off a jug. I pay about $13 locally for filters, as I haven't put in an online bulk parts order for quite a while.

I have a bad back, so it isn't an option for me, but you could also shop around for a bulk 5-gallon pail of whichever oil you use. I know that around here Rotella is really, really cheap when they put the pails on sale (not too often).
