Only 200 pounds, so was a tad surprised how much the rear sank. I am sure it is better than springs, and rode way better than any loaded wagen I have driven! It seemed it liked the load as felt more confidant around corners (went the same speed if not faster) and the slight bounce was gone. Though did reduce the acceleration from a standstill but not if in motion.
LOL, when we moved into this house in 2003, we moved our huge "Youngstown Kitchens" 1950s modular unit in that car.

After that, since they're fragile, valuable, and I didn't want the movers touching them, I moved my 12,000 78RPM records in the same car. My wife was horrified when it sagged to the bump stops in the back on the first trip with a load of records, but I started it and the rear came right back level.

That wagon will haul more than most pick up trucks.

Wow! That is 6,000 pounds! How many did you put in at a time? I think the recommendation is half ton which is about that of a pickup.

I hauled a large five speed American transmission in the Ford Focus (was totaled) and it was just about down to the stops. My Brother hauled it in the trunk of his Taurus and broke the suspension! So, he humbled himself and asked for my help. That is when are relationship started to improve. Did that in the Squareback with a load of parts and sheet metal. Also, the Squareback has hauled two six foot Christmas trees which other vehicals they have to be on the roof and get damaged. Yes a few needes might get in the interior, but makes it smell like the season! Vacuum them up in January. That is one reason why I wanted another wagen: never know when the need may arise.

Trucks have the problem of not doing well without a load. Had to borrow one and was such a pain! Plus, if you want protection you have to get an expensive shell. If you are camping, it is colderhotter. Wagens are the best for me!

If I recall, it took me three trips, then a few more for the cylinder records and the phonographs... that's not an ordeal I'm wanting to re- create anytime soon- especially since I've got another decade of collecting under my belt since, LOL.

The church has been waiting to see the wagen, but didn't make it due to not feeling well (part of which was Mother changing her plans from me driving the Mercedes to my Sister's graduation to flying). Sure was looking forward going to church and showing the pretty girl off...

Was going to install the CB, but it isn't in this home. I have looked in every crevice and cranny several times. Now have to decide when to get it. Thinking best to just wait a month or two. I need closer as was gift and want him to know I enjoy it.

I did receive the biocide, which is odd as ordered it after everything else. Oh well, I do like the fun of surprises!

That sounds about right. I.I.R.C., the maximum load capacity is 1,000 pounds, and allowed five passengers which Volkswagen assumed about 150 pounds each. So assuming that, if one was a solo lightweight like me (about 145 pounds) they could safely haul about 1,500 pounds, or three quarter tons. That is a decent sized pickup/truck. One can pull a 3,300 pound trailer, so the engine can handle the weight but with the S.L.S. being expensive, I sure wouldn't risk it!

Cylinder records! My now deceased cousin had a HUGE collection of them including a room full of Victrola players. By the time I got to visit, the collection was sold when he died by his wife and son. Did have Victrola left, and played a cylinder about the Greeks, Irish, and the Poles. Too long ago to remember the name, but was very un-politically correct and an amusing. Very interesting sound. I sure wish I had any record player as miss my records! Some day I will find a converter and get them on CD so they can be played in the Mercedes. So many things to do and so little time...

Well as a fellow vinyl lover and who now owns the wagen, I say I have the will to help! But, I am sure that will not be needed as will work itself out.

B.T.W., I see you changed your signature and like it!

I have been real careful where and how I park, but it finally happened: parking lot rash yesterday. I am sure it could have been much worst.

Got me thinking when I am in a better financial situation, maybe there is a handful of parts we should have to keep these classics on the road and looking decent. I know from my Volkswagen some things are N.L.A. or are junk, like front turn signal lenses. I have yet to find them online, but really didn't put in a hard search. Doubt I could find decent lenses in the Valley of the Sun. Sunlight also damages rubber, so another set I though of. Any others?

Over the last month or so and about thousand miles the number five Bosch glow plug is getting too much resistance and causing the light to come on for just a few seconds and the relay not much more. Last night ordered Beru glow plugs from the manufacture. Said out of stock, so shall see what happens. Just don't feel comfortable running the engine with some cylinders not getting enough heat to ignite. Even if it was warm, still think it be an issue.

Well, the post I did right went poof, so just have to be a summery...

I was stressed so decided to open the package I got today. Mineral oil I had gotten per Tram's recommendation. I thought to myself, "Perfect, I can give the Mercedes a massage!" It worked...

I was careful about spilling, but still look about eight ounces! The rubber kept soaking it up, espcially the drier's side. Made a mess but was planning to give her a bath anyway. Now think I will do it Friday or Saturday. I take time to get presentable, so why not her?

Look what FedEx brought this morning!

I put it in the emergency compartment for now, as don't want it to become a projectile. That meant moving the tools to the spare tire well, which I don't like. I was thinking about mounting it, but hate the thought of screwing holes in the interior, especially the carpet which might snag and make a real mess.

Why not put the tools under the rear loading platform where the chains were?

Because it is too shallow... I really like to make a tool roll or two, then I wouldn't need the box. Though the speakers and foam makes it more difficult to get under there. I didn't hear the tools moving, so should do for now. Right now I have the really nice lug wrench you gave me (will come in very handy, and would have if I remembered it was there...) and emergency fabrics (warm sweater and blanket).

I had to do some errands before class, which included exchanging full sized bi-fold doors. The Mercedes made it easy! With the split folding seat and the fact the bottom cushion is removable (Volvo can but much more difficult and awkward) it is a breeze! Sure felt odd pulling into Home Depot loading surrounded by full size trucks! After which got dog food and a few other supplies. Running late to class, so stopped at Sonic for a holiday shake (I never got my eggnog so need a way to get closure ). Ember was being a super good girl, so got to come up front, and while waiting, she was enjoying the sunroof. Think both of us are loving the wagen more and more!

There are some things that didn't go quit as planned. I nearly got sprayed my the windshield washer though the sunroof! Then I tried the rear, and nothing! Oh boy... I have fluid it seems, so what else do I need to check?

I did figure out why me and Vater had trouble with the pedals. The steering wheel can be a bit close to the seat if you have the height all the way up and the seat moved too far forward. Simple tweak and learning to me less sloppy with the controls, all is well. I love large steering wheels as then I have a chance of seeing the top of the speedometer and like having my hands in my lap when driving. Find it very relaxing.

Checked the tire pressure, and WAY low in the rear. Front and rear are the same at 2.07 bar. Can that affect handling? What do you all think of moving the rear from 2.7 bar to 3 bar? Should I leave the front alone?

I tried to air up at the station, but the fitting wasn't sealing on the valve stem. So bought a $10 emergency compressor and will try later when the tires are good and cold. Figured if crap, didn't loose too much. Some day I might get a home compressor. The station air pumps are getting to be worse and worse shape, especially when it comes to water. Wouldn't matter so much if there was folks that kept them up and could help when one has a problem.

Filled all five tires as recalled Tram saying the tread should be flat to below flat and with 2.1 front there was a lot of side wall bulge. So for front went with 2.4 bar which is just over the maximum pressure stated in the Owner's Manual. For the rear I went 3 bar which is the maximum in the Manual. I just checked the spare the other day and was about 1.5 bar and when I went to inflate it was flat! So filled it to 3.4 bar and now after about an hour, it is down to 3 bar. Have to decide if I want to try and use Slime or get another tire. How come I always end up with autos that need attention? Guess it comes with owning classics.

I will say the little compressor is very impressive! It is noisy and gets hot, but doesn't seem to drain the battery much, but still run the engine. I hate to see A.A.A. try and do a jump! Plus, easily fits in the glove box as about the size of a hand. What also is nice is the fitting screws onto the valve stem so no fussing and fighting. The best $10 I have spent!

Loose Exhaust Manifold

Mobil Update
At the University and have an update and a question.

First, I like the tire pressure especially in the rear. Handling feels better, but not sure how to describe it: maybe more crisp. It is especially noticeable when making lane changes and actually was fun! Had to cross for quickly due to traffic and would have been scared to do that before.

The tire pressure has also confirmed what I suspected from my reading: my exhaust manifold is loose. The tea kettle under the hood changes tune when going over bumps and on ribbed pavement is quite musical! How do I make things tight again?

Eh? Teakettle?

If you suspect a loose manifold, just tighten the nuts! Don't go Superman on them, about 28lb/ft is all. Snug the flexible collar clamps also.

They were all snug a couple months ago!

Yep, that is what it reminds me of: Grandmother's water boiling in the tea kettle.

I have a torque wrench. Well, if they are tight, the tread also suggested gaskets... Maybe I should live with it until I have more time and funds. Shouldn't hurt anything, right?

Look what came in the mail! Soon as I pulled in the drive, the OOPS truck showed up with the sheep skin seat covers. Ember could small them across the living room! So I opened the box in front of her, let her sniff, then she grabbed one and tried to make a run for it! luckily she stopped before it made it out of the box. She knows better so would have been very upset with her. At least I know I can't leave the adolescent unattended and possibly Ember. She then figured out she could her nose and check all the items in the box. I am a believer in letting dogs explore as much as possible to keep them mentally active within reason. Anyway...

Did put the steering wheel cover on before dinner, but was a real pain to stretch it over the wheel. Real comfortable, but entirely sure about its looks.

At the door was the glow plugs. What is upsetting to me is OOPS made two trips in one day when they were at the same place only a few hours apart. How hard is it to organize areas for one driver and the driver to look at his charge and see he could save a trip? We already have enough smog and don't need more!

Alas though, the bright side of the day is the glow plugs are made in Germany! I am so happy I wish I could get a Beru decal. I am already sold, and hope they are good as they are supposed to be.

Glad to get the C.D. as think I am going to take a break from the annoying Volvo and get a few things done. I would have gotten the pre chamber reamer Saturday if Mercedes Source actually got my order! Oh well, takes two.

I think I figured out why I have the tea kettle under the hood: loose turbo charger mounting.

Did a video, but been a long day, so a bit wacky. Or maybe I am always wacky...

2013 01 10 19 51 24 2111 - YouTube

What has me thinking is how the flange nuts went from tight to falling off in less than a thousand miles. Guess I need to keep the 13mm/17mm spanner in the tool box or glove box.

The rear leak has me also puzzled as clear but a tad slimy. Next time I have her out will put down clean cardboard and see what is what.
