Consider the OM617 upper/lower pan design. You may run the sump dry when running up very steep inclines. You might consider a dry sump system.

or look for a cummins 4bt or 6bt.
most merc dsl are not that powerful.

even same hp as a benzene engine, a dsl eng has 50% more torque.

I have an OM602.982 DE2.9LA in my Jeep Scrambler and love it!

It is stock with 129hp and does just fine for 99% of all adventuring that I do (mostly extended outback travel in Baja).

My only complaints are the electronic VP pump, that on rare occasion stops listening to the throttle pot, its wanting to go into limp mode after LOOOOOONG days of driving. I plan on solving these issues by swapping out the guts of the VP pump into a VE pump soon. However I'll be able to get 8 or 9% more power due to the stock piston being 11mm and the largest replacement is 12mm. Personally from experience, I rather have fuel economy (I average 25mpg) and reliability than power ... I've taken my share of "long walks" (in Baja a long walk can be really LONG).

The one complaint that can not be solved by removing the electronics is that "V" style pumps are lubricated by the fuel and DO NOT like bad fuel! I have fitted the Jeep with a Stanadyne modular fuel filter recently and it was a god-send on my last trip (I just got back from a month of exploring in Baja) when I got some watery diesel.

If I were to remotor over again with the knowledge I have now ... I'd go for an OM603 with slightly larger elements and the put most of my energy into fitting a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission to it (I run a wide range Getrag), mounting a York compressor (for on board air), and hydro-boost pump (then bail on the vacuum pump)

I think that it is REALLY EASY to start a project with high expectations (like an over built motor) and get mired is complications, where in reality it negates THE GOAL ... Going out and having fun in your rig!

Good luck!

What are you talking about with an electric vacuum pump? You must mean the injection pump. Which is full mechanical on that engine. It's an inline Bosch pump

Not on the OM602.982 DE2.9LA. It is an electoniclly controlled rotory pump Thus a VP pump. This is the first Mercedes direct injected diesel motor.

I would love to see pictures on that.

the 602 should have prechambers just like all the 61x and 60x motors.

PLEASE GIVE US SOME PICTURES OF THIS MOTOR AND ITS PUMP!!!

I don't know if Mexico is into ULSD fuel, but you might want to consider adding some 2 stroke oil to your fuel to regain the lubricity that has been lost by taking the Sulphur out. I run 1 oz per gallon just as cheap insurance for my IP.

Many years ago I ran Mexican diesel and that stuff was just horrible. Had to filter the heck out of it. I used a Racor filter as a final water separator.

Nice rig!

Actually, it is quite to opposite! IT'S VERY GOOD, lots of sulfur & lead! I make a habit of bringing home full jerrycans so i can treat rigs to "a little of the good stuff" when we're stuck state-side for a while.
You have to be careful about where you get it though. There are very few diesel cars and small trucks in Mexico, so the stations that have diesel and don't service fleet trucks might be sitting on the fuel for a while. So if one makes an effort to only fuel up where the semi's do... No problem. Actually some stations have signs boasting about their advanced filtration systems.

Here is a few pictures of the motor. Sorry none of them really show the IP though. It looks like a VE pump (and basically is) with a different top on it. Regretfully there is no mechanical pump that has the exact same specs to just swap out (DEAR LORD, I Sure have hunted though!!!), so really the only to make the motor strictly mechanical is to swap the gut/ head out of my VP pump and put them in a VE body (like from a Cummins 4BT).

I like MB diesels but

In a Jeep a cummins 4BT is a better swap , you will be happier and it will be a lot more torquey than the MB. There are easy to find adaptors as well. Just callin it like I sees it. Cheers Dan
