Yes, General Motors (EMD) at work again. The EMD SD70M-2 locomotive uses the EMD-710 2 stroke diesel engine...that's 710 cubic inches (11.6 liters) displacement per cylinder in a 45° configuration.

It is made in V8, V10, V12, V16 and V20 configurations. The V12 makes 3,200 HP and the V20 makes 5,000....

Not quite. The bore and stroke are 9.2 X 11.1". In the late '60's, I got a personal tour of the Nordberg engine factory in Milwaukee. You could stand in those cylinders. You could also drop a quarter through the oil holes in a crankshaft.

Pish posh! I like MERCEDES DIESEL !!!

that motor looks incredible. likely it weighs in around 2K... but I bet it pulls like there's no tomorrow!

I'd be fine with a 4 cyllinder version of this motor... wow it looks incredible. inline bosch pump to boot.

I was searching for images of the DI 602 and found that pump... and HAD TO KNOW MORE!!!

I love Detroit 2 strokes, I didnt know till recently that the theory behind it is that it wouldnt even run without the supercharger, only the turbo was optional,
To me there is no better sound in the world than a Screamin Detroit 2 stroke

Those pistons look to be around 9 x 12" which would fit with the EMD spec of 710 cu. in. per cylinder, assuming about a 12" stroke.

Ive got a Detroit 8V71 in a Bus, a 1975 MCI, MC5B Challenger that once belonged to a popular country western singer as a band Bus. The motor weighs over 2500#, the spicer 4 speed manual behind it weighs another 1000#, and the 300 amp oil cooled alternator hanging on it weighs over 130 pounds by itself. The AC compressor is a killer too. Its fed with three inch low pressure lines, weighs some 200 pounds and pulls nearly 25 HP at full load.

Amazingly, the engine only makes 245 or 265 HP (wont be totally sure until I see the injectors). Lower power settings push the peak torque RPM lower, so it can produce around 500 lb feet at 700 RPM. Enough to get a big Bus or semi truck rolling.

I drove it up from Little Rock last spring, it was a hoot learning to drive a non syncro gear box and driving that thing on grades and rolling 75 and 80. Last real fun thing I did with dad before he passed, good memories. Gotta get that thing back on the road soon.

Y'all know Mercedes bought up both Detroit Diesel and Frieghtliner, right?

Yeah, that was back in the 90's, before they stole Chrysler. They also bought out Oshkosh and merged it into Frieghtliner, and bought Thermo-King too, IIRC. Really riled me up when they dropped Benz off their name.

Our Claas 880 silage chopper has a OM442LA V8 Mercedes, it's 14L, has a turbo on each bank and produces about 500 hp. Amazing engine.

This is the two cycle Fairbanks Morse "OP", opposed piston engine that is one of the most interesting marine engines that I have seen. It powered a 120 foot, X Navy YTB tug that I delivered to Seattle from Norfolk Va, the home of Fairbanks Morse Co. It was 2000 HP with twenty pistons in ten cylinders and something like 8 or 900 RPM max. The WW2 submarine at the San Francisco maritime museum dock at Fisherman's wharf has an eight cylinder version of one of these engines.
