Euro Gurus Help ... Odd part for the experts
W123 Chassis Application / Engine OM617.912 NA 300D
There is a bracket with O-ring / grommit which holds the dip stick tube to the engine block. The one I got (found dangling) on the dip stick tube appears to be not able to bolt to anything. I did, however, remove the PS bracket since I do not need the PS System. Does anyone out there know if the bracket which holds the dip stick tube to the engine is different when there is NO PS bracket, et cet? The PO opted to not bolt it up anyways when there was a PS bracket, but I am sure there is something different now since there is NO PS bracket. Right now my dipstick tube is just held in by gravity. A little surprise I found out when I checked the oil for the first time about a month ago or 2 ago, and since the engine is out of the car, I want to get this fixed along with about a dozen or so surprises with this drivetrain. Thanks !!! |

The motor assembly was done by my Inidie. I did not opt anything. it was that way when i got the car back. I never figured out any way to bolt it up after the fact.

I think you're right in that there must be a different type of bracket since the PS system is gone and the AC system is gone, and I cannot see any way to bolt it up. There must be something either missing or a different bracket.

Uh bugger - it looks like I'll be visiting my garage this Christmas!
I can't find a picture of it - the closest I can get to it is this one (from this thread How I took out my 1981 W123 300D (euro) non-turbo engine) Errr I'll be back.

Thank you Army. Merry Christmas to you and your family. If you could get me a snappy or two of that, I would be super grateful indeed. That is one of my few oil leaks. I would like to fix this while the engine is now out. So, please when you're free.

I wonder if the indie lost the original euro tube and put in another with the wrong tab on it?

That tube fits right in that hole. It goes down about 4 inches or so. I am guessing the tube must be right or it wouldn't fit ? I think that tab must be different OR there is a way to orient the tab and the tube which I am too dumb to figure out yet. The fuel filter housing clearly matched up no problems when I removed the PS unit. So, I am thinking the German MB engineers thought of everything and this must be the same somehow.
I am hoping that Army takes a snappy or 2 of his or VSTECH has a non-power steering set up, BUT I think his car is a 4 cylinder 616 engine vs. 617 which might be different. I tried every variation and could not see how it would work. |

I removed power steering & ac from my 616. IIRC the guide for the glo plug harness and the dip tube just bolted up to another hole that removing the PS & AC opened up. I think the bracket had two holes one worked for PS & AC, the other without.

Now I remember!
Well here's a picture made at the back of the garage.
The dip stick tube is mounted to the aluminium mounting and shares a bolt with one that holds the power steering pump in place. I thought for a moment it would have been bolted to the head but for my engine that isn't the case. But if you haven't got power steering - well I dunno what the fix was then...

A small angle bracket should do it.

nope. I've got a 617 na euro 4 speed. but it's got power steering. a replacement bracket will need to be made to support the tube.

I am now still the one and only with manual steering/mechanical steering. LOL.

actually, you have modified power steering... a mechanical steering gear box has gear oil in a sealed unit...
you ought to rob a rack/pinion setup from a 190 or something... lose some more pounds and REALLY lighten up the front end.
