Nice 95 S350 on eBay

It says it had its short block replaced at 55K, this one could be a keeper.. no financial interest, etc etc etc.

Why is the 350 diesel not highly regarded? What makes it a weak vehicle? Would the replacement of the short block at such low mileage confirm the fragility of this motor?

The 3.5 motor in the S350 is a bored-out version of the 3.0L engine in the 300SDL. They had trouble with the connecting rods, they would bend, the pistons would go up and down in a slanted position, ovaling the piston and ruining the cyl. wall wreaking havoc.

Massive oil consuption (1qt evey 200mi or more), black smoke, rough running, low power, engine bogging down and "grunting" and eventually complete failure (thrown rod) were the symptoms. Most failed before 100K with the majority under 70K miles. A real shame for such a beautiful car.

They say the new block has the updated rods and other parts so it *should* be reliable. Time will eventually tell.

If the auction price stays where it is (aroind $12k), then it might be a good deal as a new MB crate engine is about $12k. So for $24k one can have a good car if the engine fails.
