The OP's car is a W123, so the vinyl and leather are designed more similarly.
yup. I've had two 123 leather equipped vehicles. it's REALLY hard to distinguish between tex and leather on the 123... ya have to look at the number on the rad support, or look very closely at the dimples in the seats. tex has molded dimples, leather has perforated holes.

...so if the uphosltery code starts with a zero, it's non-plaid cloth, with one, it's 'Tex, with a two, it's leather, with a three or four, it's plaid fabric?

The radiator tag on my 300D (1983) turbo does not contain the interior code. I had to look up the VIN options list specific to my car to determine this. I guess not all W123's had this problem, as demonstrated by the OP's car.

Thank you! I've been trying to figure out what radio originally came with the car!

Here is a page that I discovered a long time ago.

astralsilber.de - Infos Rund um die Mercedes-Benz Baureihe W123 und mehr...
Click on Polsterungen im W123

They have an actual photo posted on just about every color in every material. It's in German but you shouldn't have any trouble.

I would recommend that as a general guide, but the color renditions in the photos for each paint code are slightly off. The colors appear to have more blue, somewhat "colder" than what they really are.

My car was sold to me as having plastic seats - it turned out to be leather!

The best tip I've had for checking if it is leather or not - and it is a really simple one so here goes (!) => feel the underside of the covering. Even Mercedes didn't try to fake the underside of a treated hide.

It is worth noting that whilst some cars still have their original interior there are many chances for upgrades or downgrades in 30+ years of second hand car life.
