I too am curious to see how it goes. From checking out one in person they are a pretty slick vehicle.

Picked up the car today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to Autobahn Motors in Belmont CA and picked up the GLK 250 Bluetec 4Matic. That is the model name. Rather long. The extras,
Lunar Blue Paint $720
Trailer Hitch $550
Harmon Kardon sound system $810
Heated front seats $750
P01 Premium Package $3450, includes the following
Garage Door opener, integrated compass, auto-dimming driver side and rear view mirrors, power liftgate, panorama sunroof, MP3 media interface, XM w/ 6 months service, 115v AC Outlet
Total MSRP is $45,775 with a base price of $38,590
Car drives very nice and is quick. Took it out with a OBD II interface and clocked a 0-60 in 8s. Did not jump on it, but i don't think it will get much faster. The premium package is not worth the price, but i wanted the sunroof and it just seemed like a good idea when i ordered the car in January. Need to get used to the lift gate. Seems like an unnecessary feature. In reality you get very little except the sunroof that is very nice.
The sound system amp takes up a big chunk of space in the space that the spare tire should go. That is the biggest disappointment.
THIS CARE HAS NO SPARE TIRE. NO GLK 250 has a spare tire as the space was used for the ADBLUE emissions fluid tank. The car has Dunlap run flats. I will see if this is a big issue over time.
Sticker on the car states 24 city and 33 highway. I have heard of numbers as high as 37 mpg. Will check on the next road trip.
Over all i am pleased. Interesting that there is a rattle from the fake chrome tip exhaust. They are mounted to the bumper and the exhaust sits in them. tight tolerance and they hit. I would just take a screw driver and adjust, but MBZ can do that for me.

Cant post engine photo

Not sure why the engine photo wont upload. Tried couple times and cant make it happen Perhaps the file size is to big. Will try later this week.

For what ever reason, the column shift is odd. Pressing up puts the car in reverse and down is drive. Counter intuitive for me. Couple times I almost went the wrong direction. Opening the door when stops put the car in Park. I like that as there is an over ride so you can open the door and still move. This is not a big car and cargo space is limited. I knew that going in. My kids sat in the back and they had leg room like a 124 chasis. not great but i drive mostly alone for business. Seats are comfortable and car handles well. Not much body roll and smooth ride. I have put 20 miles on it so I will know more after a 500 mile rode trip. I am pleased, but I would have done couple thing different.

Some may not know by I am actually HGV's son. Ill give my couple of cents on the car.

Overall it is a winner. Plenty of power on the low end, but starts to run out of breath as speed increases. As mentioned we clocked a 0-60mph time of 8 seconds. For comparison the E320 CDI does it in 6.8 seconds and the E320 Wagon does it in 7.4 seconds, 190E at 7.8 seconds (Could get a better time) and the 300TD at 12 seconds. :-( slow ride.

Interior is comfortable and nicely trimmed and the center console is quite functional and easy to use. I don't know what the term is but the "I-Drive" is easy to use and so far poses no problems. Blutooth works flawlessly for both Media streaming and Telephony. One thing I would like to point out is the old style climate control vents. they are very easy to adjust and to open and close them you simply twist them 90 degrees one way or the other.

No onto the grips, and I have a few. First, as noted above, the fake exhaust tips rattle. That shouldn't happen. A couple of other things too.

The passenger seat controls are down on the seat instead of on the door where we all know and love them. Also no passenger side memory. I have no idea why they did that.

The shifter is on the steering column and is shift by wire. Dont care for that but it is usable. It shifts to park automatically if the car is stopped and the driver door is open. I find that silly and unneeded.

Lack of a spare tire is a huge disappointment. The emissions fluid occupies the space where if formerly sat. But we can blame California for that seeing as they are the reason for ADBLUE in the first place. At least they still give us a lug wrench.

There is no "off" setting for the headlights. There is only an "auto" setting. I don't know if this is a legal thing or not but either way I don't care for it much.

That is all I can say for now. We will see what else pops up, both good and bad.

Also i know you wanted to see the engine. Well, there is a really good looking (sarcasm) engine cover in the way. So you wont see much.

I've got quite a few customers with BMW's that have the run flats and they don't like them, especially when it comes time to replace one. In addition, around here the closest place that can replace one is quite a few miles away. Another issue is that if you go conventional you won't have anywhere to put the spare unless you can come up with a mount on the rear door.

Hey, congratulations! It looks great, I'd love to have one just like it. Maybe in 5 years or so when the leases have run out and people are trading them in.

What a day

Picked up the new GLK on Saturday. Parked it outside in the driveway on sunday afternoon and a tree branch fell and hit the car. Put a dent on the hood. I am not sure what part hit the car, but the paintless dent repair guy completely removed any evidence of the damage. It will become a story to tell later on. Cost $375 to fix one major and one minor dent. Drove to work today and got 36.3 mpg. Amazing. Mercedes needs to rethink no spare tire on this car.

Resized the engine pic and included the branch that fell on the car.

It's a 4 banger, OM651.

Pretty much state-of-the-art for current Diesel technology - Twin sequential turbochargers, piezo injectors, multivalve, balance shafts, ect.

Displacement is 2.1 liters but it produces the exact same HP/Torque figures as the 3.2 OM648 engine in the 05-06 E-class CDI.

It's an impressive engineering feat - the only real bummer from my perspective is the goofy ad-blue exhaust treatment system.

I would have to change-out of the run-flats, once I researched what their equivalent non-run-flat replacement tires are. That, and the inclusion of a conventional wheel and spare tire.

I'm thinking this is the same engine the new 2014 E-Class sedan will have.

About the adblue - I'm all for it. Diesel exhaust fumes in any great concentration are offensive to breathe, and if the adblue solves this, I'm good with it.

How about a couple pics of the cargo area? That may be the best place to locate and fabricate a mount for a full-sized wheel and spare tire. My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee had it's spare located inside the vehicle, which if I recall correctly, was an option for the full-sized spare tire. Because the rear hatch of the '96 Jeep GCL opened upward, making the mounting of a spare on the rear of the vehicle unfeasible.

Thanks for sharing your new MB purchase experience info. I'm where you were at deciding to not buy new. Being a guinea pig for the manufacturer with new products isn't a lot of fun (BTDT) as well as avoiding throwing a lot of money out the window buying new is a great motivator too.

I like your garage doors.

I see you had a 320 CDI, I really wanted one of those bad, there kind of rare.
I ended up getting a gasser cabriolet. I am pleased with it so far.
Hope you enjoy the 2013

Mike
