I wish my car had a bigger trunk instead of a spare tire. I haven't had a flat tire in 15 years. AAA is your friend.

Yeah a spare isn't that necessary, I'd probably bring one on a long trip, I've never had to change a tire in 200,000+ miles/11years of driving. I use good quality tires, replace them on time, and also carry a small air compressor, I did use that once when I got a screw in the tire and was losing air. Re-inflated a couple times and got the tire repaired at the shop a couple days later.

Update at 10k

I have put 10k miles on the GLK. So far I am pleased with the car and am getting about 28 to 35 mpg depending on speed and how much city driving i am doing. Comfortable and nice to drive. The tires are a complaint for me. I don't like the harshness of the run flats. I have also had two flat tires. Picked up a nail on one and a 1/4" lag bolt in the other. Can't get someone to repair them, so I carry a patch kit that you stick in from the outside of the tire. Just added DEF. It is a 7.5 gallon tank that should last for 10k miles. I added 3.75 gallons. Cost $14/2.5 gallons from PepBoys.
Wind shield washer system is not working. Stopped suddenly. Very odd and the tank is not easily accessible. Dealer thing to fix. A friend of mine bought the same car as I did. Her car experienced a high pitch vibration at freeway speeds from the review mirror. Took the dealer a bit of time to find. It was the weather stripping on the windshield.
All in all, pleased......but i want a full size spare tire and regular tires rather than runflats.

If you buy a new Mercedes, you don't need AAA.

But you may need a spare tire. All MB roadside assistance will do for those with runflats, is attempt to seal and re-inflate. If that does not work, then maybe they will call AAA to tow you?

If you are out West in middle of desert or driving on Trans Canada north of Lake Superior, good luck getting assistance or even cell phone coverage.

Have you thought about how you might achieve that? Maybe roof or trailer hitch bracket?

Compact spares are not much better than runflats, but would come in handy of a tire wall or tread was cut by a piece of glass or metal or the tire otherwise destroyed.

These are the options I have found (not full size spares)

Not to pounce on your thread, but the Dodge boys are complaining about malfunctioning Def sensors also. Full tank, and truck says empty. New is better, right? lol I do like the GLK's, but they might be too small for what I need.

We got our new 2014 GLK250 yesterday. Doesn't sound or feel like a diesel. Quiet and lots of pep.

Regarding lack of a spare, we have ordered a folding Vredestein. This is what the GLK350s come with. But they have a well to store the tire! The guy we are buying from likely gets them from the wreckers - usually never used. Wheel will tuck in footwell behind passenger side seat when we go on long trips. Our car does not have run-flats. Just 19" Conti4X4 M+S all weathers. At least this a tire that is widely stocked.
