1999 E300D no start situation

My 1999 e300 would not start this evening. It ran once VERY roughly for a few seconds but quit. The engine turns over freely with no binds noticed and seems that it catches a little on one cyl but not enough to bring the engine to life. Glow plugs are good, oil was just changed, ambient temp tonight was 60* F and car ra fine this morning. The only thing that I got a warning on was a brake sensor saying I need brakes. Oil looks good not milky... Thinking I'm sucking air somewhere but I don't know the 606 fuel delivery system that well.... Any ideas? It has a little over 291,000 on it now. Fuel lines and whatnot look original to the car.

Typos curtesy of my iPad-

If the Glow Plugs are OK it is likely your Filters or Tank Screen are Plugged.

The other 2 issues are the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump needs rebuilding or the Fuel Pressure Relief/Overflow Valve (I have read it has a Plastic Part that deteriorates).

An Air leak is possible as are leaking Delivery Valve Seals.

I should note, the car is parked on a slight angle front end slightly higher then the rear..

hmm. Well all those sound simple enough. Top of the IP is dry, so I dont think it's the delivery valves, when they went on my 603 it was a terrible mess. I did get diesel the other day from a different place. their price was 3.99 a gallon (obscenely high) so I might have picked up some crap from there too.... water maybe?

Probably your SOV if it cranks and sounds like it isnt getting fuel.

Hood up, window down, turn key to pos 2 and listen for teh click of the SOV openning. No click = no start. Cycle key a few times, if SOV opens, crank and start.

Check up under SOV for leaky oring. If wet, repalce oring. If dry, replace K40 relay. If intermittent no start or dies while driving (as if keywere turned off), repalce K40. If having other electrical faults, replace K40.

That's it. Seen it a bunch. It is probably the shut off valve bolt on top of the filter. You can test easy by replacing it with just a regular fuel filter bolt from the 603 engine on your wagon.

Could be delivery valves too. Also check injector return lines.

The '99 shouldn't have a shut off bolt. My guess is that there's a small leak in one of the fuel line o-rings and with the angle that the car's parked, this is allowing the fuel to leak back into the tank. Especially if it has less than a half tank too.

Look at the plastic line that leads into the prefilter. If it's totally empty (2" bubble is OK), then that's your problem. If you can have a helper crank the car while you watch the fuel line, you should see any bubble disappear as soon as cranking begins.

think you nailed it. I generally dont have my tank below 1/2 but it is, also with the angle and the age of the plastic hoses on there I think it's right. the SOV works as it should, the car did start ones and albeit ran horribly it still did start. It would also explain the slight stumble I had from time to time... air getting sucked into whatever is sucking air. It's at the shop right now. I'm violently ill (severe cold, I dotn dare cough) so I cant screw with it otherwise I'd work on it myself. I'll post what they say. it's a different shop then the one I normally go to. I cant have this car down. It's my only one that works. I stole my sisters car (my old ranger) to get around.

With the 606, it's best to stock up on o-rings for the various connectors in the fuel system, never know when they'll fail. Pre-filter and shutoff valve especially.

More often than not, I've been able to replace individual o-rings rather than the clear fuel lines.

Without the option to manually purge air from fuel lines on these cars, I've found it's best to open the fuel system only with a full tank. Filling new fuel filters with diesel before installing helps also.

I find it best to install a primer bulb in the feed line. On the W210 I believe one can do-undo the fuel lines near the firewall easily compared to the W124

have posted this elsewhere but I got my car back this morning from my indy: had leaky IP seals, so relpaced those + plastic lines. SOV turned out to be leaking as well. I had planned on doing seals & lines myself this spring, so it worked out better, as I wouldn't have necessarily thought of replacing the SOV while I was in there. So happy to have the car back & I don't have to drive my fiancee's Honda Fit anymore .

@ Aquatic-feel better soon, man.

Like Lou Brown said in "Major League", "That's a hell of an idea..."
