147,000 Mile Therapy - 300D/T

Dieselers -

Just thought I'd share my joy. Between my mechanic and myself, I have done the following to the '84 in the last week:

1. Cleaned the fuel enrichment circuit.
2. Replaced motor mounts.
3. New style fuel pre-pump.
4. New fuel lines.
5. New fuel pre-filter.
6. New shut-off valve.
7. New thermostat.
8. New radiator.
9. New brake pads.
10. New front rotors.
11. A/C charge.

Results -

1. The car doesn't stink like diesel fuel anymore.
2. The car is running at +/- 80'c instead of 100'c.
3. The brakes don't rumble to a stop anymore.
4. The car doesn't contemplate shutting-off for 10 seconds after I turn the key.
5. The car is probably about 10% faster in acceleration than before.
6. The A/C gets *really* cold.
7. There are no coolant or fuel drips on my driveway.
8. The car glides down the road like silk.

Just wanted to share my ecstasy!

Man that's great Reed - I'm feeling it with ya man...but not because my diesel's running that well. Perhaps in a few weeks when I finally get the IP timing set and replace the motor and rear differential mounts.

Something about how a basic refurbishment can breathe life back into these awesome machines is intoxicating! Aside from your normal consumables (oil/air/fuel filters, brake pads, tires) you're set for the next 100kmi my friend

Great job on the 'resurrection'!

Regards,
- Ryan

Question

Nice job! What made you decide to replace the motor mounts? I don't think mine are bad but I'll accept any input you might have as to what to look for or how to test them.

Good work and very rewarding. I continue to be amazed at how satisfying it is to fix something that holds quality. You gave me more motivation.

I got a strange new driveline vibration, felt like engine was leaning on some part of the chassis without any sort of barrier, so I got into motor mounts. In looking at them, they were all either swollen or disintegrated, so in all I guess it was a good call.

Makes a world of difference. I never would have thought of it until it started making that new vibration, but it has probably needed them for about 2 years at least!

Question

I looked at my motor mounts yesterday and they are definitely old. They seem to be holding on but the rubber is definitely rotted. I will have a friend help me check more thoroughly this weekend by holding the brake and shifting from reverse to forward and see what the motor does. When I was browsing on Fastlane, I noticed that there is an engine mount and an engine shock listed for my year. Do we replace both? Is this a system that works together?
