240D burning lots of oil

so ... right when i got the car 83 240D
changed oil , pan gasket , filter . complete flush . ect .
after that ,,, it seems to be using more and more oil .
seems to be a quart every 150 miles now ....

so , how do i check if
A rings are what is sucking up the oil
B oil is coming through the intake / crank case air
C oil is coming in through the valve seats / seals

i know the engine doesnt leak one drop on the floor ever ... so its not that ..

where are you filling the oil to?
it's been noted on several vehicles, that the FULL notch is max height. filling that level will cause rapid burn off. fill to just above the low notch and see if the oil stays put.

Do you have Exhaust Smoke and if so what color?

You mentioned most of the sources. Valve Stems worn and/or Valve Stem Seals shot.
Replacing the Valves Stem Seals is slightly Labor Intensive but cheap.
If you pulled of the Manifolds you would likely see your Valves incrusted with Oil residue or wet.

Sticking Piston Rings. Soaking the Cylinders in Marvel Mystery Oil of other Chemical may or may not work.
Broken Piston Rings; no easy remedy for that.
A Leak Back Test for the above.

Some Members have said the little O-ring in the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump went bad and allowed the Fuel Supply/Lift Pump to suck Oil out of the Fuel Injection Pump and it mixes with the Fuel and burns in the Combustion Chamber.

The part of the Oil Fuel mix that does not burn goes back to the Fuel Tank to start over. That should tinge your Fuel a grey color.

If it's the original engine, I'm pretty sure the vacuum pump does not vent into the intake on an 83.

By your year the vaccum pump output is vented to the crankcase. So it cannot contribute to oil consumption even if bad.

Questions (all over the map):

1. What colour is the dipstick handle on your car?

2. You say that it doesn't leak when parked. But is there evidence of oily 'blowback' on the bottom of the car, from it leaking while you're under way?

3. When warm, if you park it for an extended period and let it idle (more than 2 minutes, for example), does it smoke then?

4. Is there any evidence of oil around the connections for the oil cooler lines?

for some reason i forgot about this thread ...

1. What colour is the dipstick handle on your car?
not sure will check when i get home

2. You say that it doesn't leak when parked. But is there evidence of oily 'blowback' on the bottom of the car, from it leaking while you're under way?
you mean from the exhaust ? yes , if parked in the snow after 4 or 5 min , the snow around the pipe turns black

3. When warm, if you park it for an extended period and let it idle (more than 2 minutes, for example), does it smoke then?
no , it smokes a tiny when stared ,,, and cold out ... more of a white smoke ?

4. Is there any evidence of oil around the connections for the oil cooler lines?[/QUOTE]
nope ,

It sounds like time for a compression test, or better yet a leakdown test. With a leakdown test, you can listen for where the compression is going. If you hear it in the tailpipe, it's an exhaust valve. If you hear it below the air filter, it's an intake valve. If you hear it through the oil filler cap, it's a ring/cylinder/piston issue.

Sounds like now would be the time to check.

Hope this helps.

At the risk of turning this into an oil thread =>

What oil are you using + what viscosity?

Does your engine mark its spot?

Have you got lots of oil in the air filter / crankcase breather tube?

what do you mean ?

i know the compression is low ... lots of blowby , enough you cant dump in oil when its running ,

nope .. but the line is below the air cleaner so i dont think there would be much ,

You have solved your own problem. ~ Rings !! They are either stuck, broken or have lost their spring.

By marking its spot I meant - when you park it does it leave an oily presence behind!

But it does indeed sound like the crank case pressure is a tad on the high side.
