I have a few of those cans, some paper some metal on my shelf. My dads friend had a service station and when he closed it he didn't know what to do with them, so my dad took then and gave them to me and my friends. That was back in high school when we were all into hot rods My friend Nick used the oil in his dads 1950s vintage ford tractor, and used the cans to hold pencils in the shop. My cans are still full. I'm not sure what to do with them. So they just sit there and look cool.

I had a whole case of Quaker State 10w 30 cans from when I went to purchase with my dad from the mid '80s. I found them in my parent's storage in the late eighties or early nineties and somehow decided to use them. I remember exactly that I should be keeping these as collector's items as I was pouring them into the engine. Could of been neat to have them still.

Here is the WD-40 that we still use:

See? It still contains petroleum distillates!

On a related note, this came in the mail from Amazon during Christmas week -- it reeks, but works. I love it already

On the first pic, the metric volume makes it mid 70's and newer. Paper cans went away in the mid 80's. ( Valvoline was the last hold out and had a poster stating such.)

Take a look at the API doughnut, that should narrow things down a bit.

Fifty-nine cents probably puts the can the OP was talking about between 1973 and 1980. I recall filling the 8qt common sump on my '69 Austin America with thirty-nine cent Kmart 10w30 back in 1972.

Sorry, but I couldn't help myself.

I'm old enough to remember the paperboard cans and we had a few of the full metal cans around.

Every time I see the old oil cans, I can't help but think of this:
