"just in case" supplies for my 300D
Hi,
I have a 1983 300D. Im taking it on a long (2000 mile) drive in a few weeks, and want to be sure that Ill have supplies for most anything that could go wrong and be fixible by me on the road. Id like any suggestions of any parts, and tools that would be useful to have. Right now my ideas are: -standard MB tool kit that came with the car -phillips and srtaight screwdriver -extra pair of pliers -metric rachet set (8-17 mm bits), maybe one of the cheapo sets from Kmart with a craftsman rachet, Ive never had a problem with the cheap sets. -replacement hood star -3-way vacuum coupling I am buying a 14mm allen wrewnch tonight, any other allen wrenches to get? Any torx drivers? rachet sets usually come with an extension, any other things that would be good for easy DIY jobs, should I figure something is bad? -what should I take in case Id need to fix a hole in a hose/fuel line? I got new belts but what about them too? What about parts, Id like to put an order here on fastlane, so any reccomendations on what might fail on a long trip woul dbe great. I know this is quite difficult, pure speculation, but I havent had my car for too long, and have never taken it on longer then 150 mile trips, so people who have experience might know some other things. Any help is most appreciated Many thanks JMH |

Forget that stuff...
all you need is a credit card and a cell phone.

I have the stock benz toolkit, and the standard metric socket and open wrenches. Also have a full set of metric allen heads. For emergency parts I always have a section of injector hose, fuel filter (both kinds) oil filter, (just keep the box of 3-4 in the trunk) section of fuel line. Also have a gallon of oil.

Don't forget a torch dropping your wheel nuts in daylight is bad enough but in the dark, dont even think about it.A set of replacement bulbs wouldn't go amiss either.
If you can't fix it yourself one of those portable tv's will give you something to do whilst you wait for recovery! Seriously though you might like to include a rubber mat.Odds on if you have to get down on the ground for a repair job you're gonna get dirty,so disposable overalls are always a good idea. Regular maintenance of your Merc should keep most problems at bay.Happy motoring.Bear

Just for us that don't speak English English a "torch" is a "flashlight" (I looked it up )
I would say have a cell phone with you, that way you can call Mercedes Road side assistance

Disposable overalls? Great idea! Never thought of that. I have a couple of pairs of latex gloves as well. Flashlight I forgot to mention as I have always had one in any car I own. Most long trips I take involve several day backpacking trips so I always have food, water, a book to read, cell phone, and a change of clothing. If the car was disabled in the middle of nowhere I could always hike out to find help. Best bet is to just check all the stuff like belts and hoses and replace as needed. These are the things that will cause a breakdown more times than any and the ones that can leave you stranded or with an engine that is ruined. I used to drive large crane and service ladder trucks all over the southeast as an install forman for a local sign company. Belts and hoses were the reason for many parking lot and roadside repairs. Also coils inside those &#$# Ford distributors. The gas trucks would also break way more than the diesels ever did.

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned first, but an extra set of fuel filters. Somehow I doubt that the average small town middle of nowhere auto parts store is going to stock MB filters, and it isn't like there is an MB dealer in every town.

Of course carrying a copy of your Haynes manual might not be a bad idea! One thing I forgot, I carry one of those small tyre compressors/torches that plug into the cigarette lighter.Bear
