Center console Surprise
 

I managed to removed the stock radio and installed a new system, I thought while I have it out I wanted to see what was behind the climate control board. Thinking maybe there is a bad wire which is affecting the passenger side window. To my surprise a harness and what looks like a sensor popped out. As I attempt to get a better look at it, the chip looking thing broke in half.

Can someone educate me what is it and where does it connect to? Also, is there something similar on a 1985 300SD? I still have the car from a friend.

hmm it looks like a temp sensor... odd it'd be behind the radio/climate control on an 84...
is this on the 84 in your sig?

My apologies, yes it is from my 1984 300D. It was not actually directly behind climate control, I noticed it just hanging so I pulled it out as seen on the photo. I disconnected it from the harness, what affect will it have on the climate control function?

yes looks like the temp sensor to me too..

one window bad is probably the switch. take it out and clean it and it may come back to life.

it samples the in cabin air temperature...its supposed to be attached under the dash where the little vent is...i guess if you disconnected it the automatic setting of your climate control would cease to function...

Except I don't think the sensor is in the dashboard on 84...

That's the cabin temperature sensor. See the small 1x1 inch grille in the middle of the dash? The cabin temp sensor resides inside this grille to sample cabin temp and regulate the climate control unit to heat or cool the cabin down as desired (by your thumbwheel input).

Thank you everyone for your inputs, since that was just "hanging" around behind the panel. that explains why it was hard to keep the cabin temp stable; it was either way too hot or cold. I guess I am visiting a loca JY tomorrow.

Also ensure the foam tube is intact from the air box to the sensor grill. 123s draw cabin air into the grill using the blower for suction. This is done to get an accurate sample.

(On 124s there is a dedicated aspiration blower behind the glove box for this purpose and they moved the grill up to the dome light assembly.)

Technically that is called a Thermistor. :D It needs to be put back up under that little vent on the dash, someone probably yanked on the wires in the past and knocked it down in there.

I think one can improvise on the thermistor with a generic component if this sensor is very hard to find.

I would like to thank everyone for your input, I removed the sensor from the 1985 300SD, of course it was mounted on the overhead and it was configured differently (of course). So I pulled the small grill from the dash so I know what I am looking for from the junkyard, it was my day. The JY had the same year and model and not much was taken from it, then again I dought this are popular for replacement.

Anyway, the entire unit looks like a corn pipe with the sensor being housed by a black tube with the grill at the top. I did discover the tube that connect it to the air supply was gone.

Today I felt llike "plastic Man", because that was the only way in connecting the harness back to the sensor. Plus removing one of the center counsel vent fixture to see the sensor. I am now able to regulate the temp in the cabin.

Now I just need to find out why the driver side rear and the front passenger side window does not work. I'll start a new post for those. thank you again everyone.

Fuse issue.

I replace all fuses when I get one of these cars.

Remember to replace them with copper/ brass fuses and clean your window switches.
