Well as you may have read in a previous post, water was discovered to be in the transmission. Tell me if I am wrong, but from what I have read, water destroys an automatic transmission. One of the things it supposedly does is causes the adhesive on the clutches to dissolve, which when our mechanic first tried to get the transmission to work said he though both clutches were probably gone. The symptoms are similar to B2 failure also apparently.
I have water in my automatic transmission. Can it be flushed out? - Quailty Transmission Service in Tempe, Arizona

I vote manual swap. Of course, my stock solution to any automatic transmission problem includes the step, "Remove and discard automatic transmission".

I was thinking of doing that as a summer project. Right now we are just trying to get it running so my mom can have something else to drive to work than our worn-out 96 Mercury Grand Marquis. Also, my brother and I need something to do our driving test in on March 8 (I was told not to bring large vehicles, so that ruled out the Sprinter, our Grand Marquis probably wouldn't pass inspection, and you can't rent a vehicle).

On the water issue, it seems to me that it depends on how much water got in there and how long it was in there.

I took my test in a 1973 Chrysler Newport. Good times

Well my mechanic said he looked at the diagrams and all the material that Mercedes gave him and he doesn't think it is compatible. So now I either come up with the money for the new transmission, try to find a correct used one, or sell/part the car.

I swapped the other way and it worked

I swapped a rebuilt auto from an 87 190D na into an 87 190DT and it worked fine., I think that is pretty definitive, I had the auto lying around from a manual swap. If I recall I had to use the flex disc from the DT to make it work.
Cheers Dan

I think its possible my mechanic is wrong (he may be more concerned about the gearing than I am) but that deal on the auto transmission from the forum member is off the table, he had another buy interested and I didn't tell him for sure I wanted the transmission in time so I think another forum member has gotten it (and best of luck to that other customer). Now I have an offer for a 5 speed manual swap, I shall definitely be looking into that.
