W126 Pin Striping

I plan on repainting my 300SD soon and I saw this beautiful 1991 300SE in the junk yard this weekend and I fell in love with the pin striping. I would like to have something like this on my car once it is repainted. I would prefer to have it painted on but I could settle for stick-on if the cost of painting it on is outrageous. Any thoughts? Other suggestions?

Pin striping I believe was something the dealers put on the cars. Most of the one`s I have seen are the tape. I have seen a few that had the pant applied.

Not every one likes it, it is a personal thing. I like it, but not too much. a few accents here and there, all depends on what type vehicle it`s applied on.

We have a guy that live close to me that does it for a living, "Real Ralph" is the name he goes by. hand painted pinstriping I have seen his work and it is great.

If I were to have Pin Stripping done, it would be by this guy. I have no idea what he charges.

Man, I really need to get the ball rolling on my taxes from last year. Once I get my refund, I am putting that towards a paint job. I'm hoping for a few grand to come back. I think I found the paperwork I need. Just need to check that it is for 2011. Then I'll bring it to my CPA when I go on my trip to Boston this weekend. Wait a month and it will be new paint time!

As far as I know, the coach striping that includes the MB star, is tape. A local MBCNA members 560SL has this, def. tape. Perhaps ther also was a stencil?

Anyway, I just had the coach lines re-done on mine- Arctic white with Blue interior, the upper stripe is approx. 1/8" blue, underlined with a red pencil stripe, hand painted.

Again, to my knowledge all lining was dealer or owner, not factory.

It was definitely tape-on striping. I could feel it was not smooth against the rest of the paint. If I find someone who is good at painting this stuff on, I'm sure they could duplicate the picture above. Perhaps with different colors since my car is smoke grey.

Why not tape it off and pinstripe it yourself?

Because painted pinstriping is not 'taped off'. It's hand done with either a brush or a wheel. For painted stripes you want to have a pro do it. There are still a few guys around that can do it, ask about in local car clubs, refinish shops, car shows, etc.

That said Cal-Stripe is very nice stripe tape and comes pre-done with a variety of colors, two-tones, various widths, same widths, different widths, etc. It has a clear overlay for applying, not difficult to do if you have a 'straight eye'. 3M has bought them so now it's ScotchCal tape, and your auto paint jobber can order it for you. Some larger distributors might carry a few popular colors. Here's the 3M site on the product: On-line Product Catalog:*3M

It goes on smooth and stays on. Have used it a number of times over the past 35 years.

EDIT: BTW, what you were looking at in the pic is 1/16" double stripe.

Might want to check with the CPA as to how/why the Gov't is getting an interest-free loan from you on your money paid in. Just a hunch, but it sounds as if you're paying too many thousands in that could be used by you, instead of them.

Tape is the worst. Go painted, if at all.

Thanks for the good advice, folks. I don't trust myself enough in my artistic abilities to start painting over a new paint job. I can barely get paint on speedometer needles, never mind straight lines freehand. LOL

Yeah, I am lazy with my taxes. Then I lost the paperwork. The CPA says the govt is supposed to pay interest on the return if they owe money to me. Dunno if they really do but I would probably get a dollar from the bank if I had the money in there.

Wow, that is a lot better than I expected. I wish banks would pay that!
