A group 49 battery should function perfectly fine at 5 degrees, especially if the engine has synthetic oil. I've started my TD at 35 below zero F with no block heater.

Yes, the dipstick oil heaters will fit your dipstick tube.
Yes, a dipstick oil heater is very flexible to make the turns and reach the oil pan.

FYI:
* I have two of the dipstick oil heaters, have owned/used up hundreds.
* I have one hose heater, have owned/used up hundreds.
* I have three of the magnetic heaters, have owned/used up hundreds.
* All of my personal vehicles have a factory block heater installed, and prefer them as most cost effective for me.

All of them work, going from best to least effective:
#1. Keep the vehicle in a heated garage.
#2. Keep the vehicle in an insulated garage.
#3. Keep the vehicle in a garage.
#4. A diesel fueled hydronic heater. Expect $1,650.00 USD for their low cost unit installed.
#5. A factory block heater.
#6. A hose heater.
#7. Oil pan Heater Hot Pad.
#8. Magnetic heaters.
#9.

OR...you could get lucky as heck and buy two Webasto's off of Craigslist shipped to my door for $120 and install it yourself.

One is in my 6.5 and the other (a petrol version) is sitting on the shelf. I also had one on my 84 SD that I sold with it when I sold it (worked out a deal with the buyer). That one was brand new (NOS). I bought it off eBay for about $450. The deals are out there.

We have a similar model on the I6 John Deere. Does the job even with a fully exposed motor

I use a hot pad on the bottom of the pan (150watt) and lower hose heater on my 300SD.

The 190d has an engine block heater which works fantastic, I have heat within 20 seconds of starting the engine even when its 10F out.

... wow. that's cold! how is it POSSIBLE to start a diesel at those temps?
I simply cannot imagine it. no heater at all? nothing on the fuel tank?
JUST GLOW PLUGS? was the fuel mixed with nitroglycerin?

For what we get here in indiana which is on occasion down to 20 below, a block heater is the most reliable for the money. At 20 below though everything has to be in great shape to start even with the block heater.
