Red face A coolant tube mystery tour

I (fairly) recently posted about a coolant tube that's mysteriously disconnected and just hanging out in the engine compartment. I didn't have pictures at the time, but I've taken a video, and posted on youtube.

basically, what we've got here is a coolant line that comes from the tank, goes over the radiator, comes down into the oil cooler(?), dives down through the engine compartment and ends up leaning (and open) against the brake fluid reservoir compartment on the driver's side...

Coolant loss is significant, as you'd expect. I filled that tank up 71 miles ago, and it's about 25% down from the fill line...

any help/ comments are appreciated.

Answer

That looks like part of a waste vegetable oil heating system, partially removed.
The routing has been altered, and should have been restored to OE spec.

Ah, the pieces are falling into place, now.

That makes a lot sense, the previous owner mentioned a WVO tank being removed. The right rear quarter panel has a hippie hole in it, where they put the WVO tank fill.

As I'm a noobie, can you tell me what I should do? Is this something I can handle (get a manual, figure it out) or take it to a real mechanic (a big boy problem)?

that oil cooler thingy is a heat exchanger which uses the heat of the engine coolant to warm the veg oil. we need pics of your #hippie_hole

that hose coming out of the coolant reservoir should just go down to the nipple on the bottom of the passenger side of the radiator. here's a pic of where it goes on my 300sd.

'Hippie hole' Almost doesn't sound safe for work.

At the end of the video, it's a flat plate heat exchanger. PM me if you don't want it. or email moon 161 at gmail.com I'd just restore original plumbing. You may need to do some research and buy some hoses. No big deal.
