Diesel purge, Filters, no start...
 

I purged the motor today and then changed the inline, and screw on filter on my 617. Then I found out my hand primer wasn't functioning, so I figured I'd just be trying to turn it over for a while. No workie...

I loosened the hard lines to the injectors and cranked it. The front four (1,2,4,5) leaked fuel. The rear (3) didn't leak at all. I'm beginning to think I shouldn't have purchased this car, even as cheap as it was.

What's going on here? I tried cranking it for 20-30 seconds a couple times with a few minute break in between to let the starter cool down and still nothing. I've given up for the moment.

If the hand primer isn't working and its the white plastic screw version.You need to install the new black pump version because you are more then likely letting air into the system. If you don't fill the new spin on with diesel it will take a while to purge the air out. Then with the hand primer not working....it may never rid the system of air. It does take a little cranking to get the air out..

After trying to crank it for about 10 minutes I pulled the spin off filter and checked with the intent to fill it with the rest of the purge, but it was already filled. the inline too was filled at that point. That's when I tried to bleed the hard lines directly and all bled fuel but the one closest to the firewall (3). I do have the old white hand primer though.

The car started first try, every time, within a second of the key turning up until the filter change. My fuel was very cruddy though after the purge.

Chances are when you unscrewed the primer to prime the system it destroyed it. You can unscrew all the hard lines and crank until fuel is flowing, as soon as one flows tighten it....and move on...the last one not getting fuel out is because there is still air trapped in it. You can put a balloon or uh hmm condom over the primer pump and it will keep the air out until you buy a new one. You're then just going to have to keep cranking until it catches then floor it.....if your fuel is still bad looking you may also have a plugged tank screen.

Thanks for the responses. I'll try the rubberized air seal that you speak of as well as bleeding the final line again.

so a condom was put on and i bled the last hard line. The car chugged to a start after a second but died everytime after a second or two of running... It'll wait until the morning. I'm accepting any ideas, including any that involve more condoms..

My diesel has been starting weird in cold weather. When it sounds like it is starting I have to hold it in start for several more seconds until the RPM builds more. If I cut off the starter too soon I get nothing. There was a video posted here a few days ago and that gave me the idea on how long to hold the starter on.

Time for a new primer pump.

any diy primer removal stuff people have readily available before I go digging in the internet..? last time I searched for something too long and wound up with unicorns having sex with yogi the bear...

Can i use a used primer pump?

If you can find a used new style one there would be no problem, but they are pretty cheap.

Alright. I replaced the primer pump with a new bosch unit and as expected I suppose, the car fired up after cranking for about 8 seconds and applying a little throttle. My thanks go out to everyone that responded.
