om617 oil thermostat

I am in need of a new oil thermostat for inside my oil filter housing that controls oil flow to the cooler. Any sources? Can't seem to find one except through the dealer. Also, has anyone ever performed this job? I have the filter housing removed and am in need of the special two pronged socket to get the t-stat out. Does anyone have one or know of a source for one? I'll post pics of what I'm talking about later.

I'd be inclined to just pick up a complete oil filter housing at the junk yard and stick it on. It's $13 at the local yard here. They don't go out that often.

Thought about that ...

No diesels locally –– KC or STL –– when I checked a couple weeks ago. Maybe that's changed. $13 you say? I may call around.

What are your symptoms? I've been on this forum for 10 years and have never seen a post about a failed oil thermostat before.

Yeah, still nothing locally. There's a considerable dearth of old Benz's in the yards around here, though I know several local w123 owners, highly doubt however, any of the local owners got a spare filter housing lying around.

Easy to diagnose; just drive your Car a resonable amount of time and if one Oil Cooler Hose does not get hotter than the other that is the Issue.

If you have one you could use one of those Infared Thermometers that you Point but they are not real accurate.

However, I Winter may not be the bast time to test for that.

There is a few threads on the subject.

I the last thread that I read the Person took a straight Punch side ways but in one of the Ring Holes and tapped the Retaining Ring Counter Clockwise and that was enough to turn the Ring even with the ring staked in place.

The retainer is the one with the 2 round holes

X2.

Never opened up even after 300 mile drives in the summer with AC. Hoses never got warm, let alone hot. It's been broke since before summer and I just got around to fiddling with it.

I've got one I took off my 617 from a 123 when I swapped in one from an SD for clearance on the diesel 107 project... Cheaper than the one referenced. PM me if you're interested.

I did some looking around and found a part number 1171800175; looking further I came acrossed one of our own threads showing the Thermostat and the same part number; see post #41:

Will I still Get Filtered Oil If I Block Off My Oil Cooler Lines or Ports?

Got t-stat

I got the thermostat thanks to member Hogweed, who also sold me a used oil cooler. Question now is how to get the old tstat out of the housing? Seems to require a special Mercedes, pronged socket to fit in the lock ring holes. I've thought about taking a pair of needlenose pliers in a vice and twisting the housing, but I'm afraid that would scuff up the lock ring pretty good, plus there's no way to properly torque it. Any ideas?

Local pep boys has a rack of specialized tools. I'd look to see if one of them will fit it. Most of the ones I've seen have the pins further apart though. There is a thread on here describing the use of a punch to get it out.

In case you never solved it, I did it very simply. Take needle nosed pliers, shove one end in each hole, grip your pliers and twist it out. I believe I blue-loc-tited it when I re-installed.
