Hi everyone- I'm new to this site and forum and have inquired to many locally but can't seem to find an answer.

My 84 190D with approximately 150Ks on it suddenly started blowing' blue smoke from tailpipe; car runs, starts and accelerates as it always has, but now- lots of blue smoke is blowing' out the exhaust, Always seem to had a noisy valve train in this car and I'm curious to know if these engines were known for leaky valve guides or weak vale train in general.

If any of you have info on this motor, I would surely appreciate the input before I start disassembling this motor, thanks to all in advance.

Does it just blow blue smoke after sitting at a light or all the time? If you just get blue smoke as you pull away from a light, that could be valve seals. Smoke all the time can be a lot worse. Could be valve guides or even worse, rings. I would probably do a compression check and leak down test to see what is going on in the motor. If it has never had valve seals, it is due.

Smell the exhaust. If it burns your eyes, it's fuel related. If it doesn't, then it's burning lube oil from somewhere.

They are not known for such issues. Well-maintained heads over 250k miles often do not cause smoke such as yours.

Check you oil level a few minutes after shutdown. If it is too high, you will be burning oil.

If this engine has seen alternative fuels / waste oil - consider the oil control rings as a culprit under Bobk's guidelines. But a compression test won't show that failure.

232k on the engine in my 190d.....other than a noisy lifter for a few miles after a cold start....it performs perfect, nothing visible out of the exhaust ever except right at first from a very cold start. If synthetic oil doesn't clear up the lifter issue I'll replace them this summer....

As jt20 said, the 601 engine rarely has valve or seat issues.

The 601 has an iron block with an aluminum head, so.....head gaskets will fail. Typical is failure between cylinder 1 and an oil passage or the front timing chain passage, which dumps oil into cylinder one and out the tailpipe. Non stop blue smoke. Been there, done that

If the oil has not been changed regularly over it's life, bad for the rings. I would do a compression test.
