Im back! with another B2 questions for the Gurus!

Its been a while .. so long in fact that I cant find or remember my old login info so i created a new account.

I was here a few years back and you folks provided me with the tech info that allowed me to get my 1984 300d out of the bushes on the side of my house and on the road! (busted B2 piston).. and its been there ever since now providing safe reliable transportation to my elderly father in law who absolutely loves it to death... i was sad to give it up but am happy to have helped him out with a set of wheels...

So im back here today because i have an oppertunity to pick up a nice 1991 2.5 300d for suuuper cheap cause the owner said it wont go into any forward gear ..... sounds familiar and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the B2 is the likely culprit in the older brother of my original 300 or is it likely something else i dont want to get into? I belive the trans ID is 722.418 ?? (from what i read on the net).. Is the process of changing the out the B2 the same as on the 84 without having to drop the transmission? Is there anything else i can do to further diagnose it before buying it and towing it back to my house??

as always any input is much appreciated!

News from Mechanic: 190D transmission totally shot

Recent thread for a W201 which I understand to have a similiar designed tranny to your W124 in question. Experts all say check the B2 first if it backs up but won't go into any forward gears.

Good luck!
