Om617 drive belt adjustment

The belts on my 617 squeal when driving away. I believe this is due to the tension being too loose. I can press on the belt and it deflects more than 1/4". When revving by hand it appears to come from the passenger side. The ax belt is off and the PS pulp belt is installed.

The pulley for the alt and fan are dual belts. Also, which way on the adjuster is to tighten the belt? I want to say turning the bolt left tightens.

Don, do a search on this. It is easy to try and tighten the belt and end up screwing up the adjuster. You need to loosen 1 or 2 other bolts first and the the adjuster. I did mine 3 years ago and it is still fine with only 1 readjust after a month of driving. Sorry I can not remember how many need to be loosened but I know this has been a fairly common thread. Good luck.

YO, Joe, did you skip class the day this was being explained?

The below thread has a good picture of the alternaor and the 3 17mm bolts that have to be loosened first

Then the long nut can be turned to the right to tighten the belts.

Then be sure to tighten the 3 17mm bolts.

the BIGGEST issue with this belt set is it's a TRUE 10MM belt, NOT a 9.5mm like all the mcparts stores sell... you REALLY need continental 10mm thick belts, and they need to be purchased from the same lot to get the EXACT CORRECT LENGTH MATCHED!!!
after that it's a simple matter of loosening the locking bolts, LUBRICATING THE ADJUSTER THREADED ROD and getting the belts to the right tension.

I searched this but I guess I kept using the wrong terms.

Looks like I missed a bolt, glad I didn't really do much of anything other than try and fiddle with the bolts.

This is the Adjuster Bolt. If you don`t loosen up the 2 long bolts and the 17mm nut on the end of this bolt, you will bent the rod and bend the bracket where the long nut pivots.

This is a pricy bolt to replace, $40 - $50.

The search function sucks since they took the Google function away.

I go into Google, type in Peach Parts and alternator adjustment etc...

Also click on Images and a whole slew of pictures come up. click on one of the pictures, then click on the "X" in the corner, you get into the web site the picture was posted from.

I have an alt out and there are no threads in either of the two mounting holes.

I need to replace the alt on the SD.

As I recall, the #3 bolt won't come all the way out, it hits something.

I had to remove the aluminium bracket bolted to the engine block http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/285473-getting-alternator-off.html
post #8.

The #2 bolt, (bottom one) can become so rusted inside the aluminum mount, it won`t come out.

I removed the engine and was stripping it down. that bottom bolt would turn, but couldn`t get it out even using Kroil for several days. Using an air impact gun it would spin. Had to remove the mount with the alt from the engine. sat it on its side and soaked the bolt threaded end with Kroil for 2 weeks. finally using a smaller diameter bolt drove it out with a hammer.

The bolt was swollen up with rust and corrosion from the aluminum.
Now I slather it up real good with Anti-Seiz compound before reinserting it.

It's a bit more complicated than stated above.

You cannot simply loosen the nut on the back side of the bolt as shown above. If the nut is slightly stuck on the bolt threads, the bolt will attempt to rotate. But, the bolt cannot rotate because the 90 section that holds the tensioning nut will prevent this rotation............until this section snaps off the main bolt. Since the 90 degree section is considerably smaller in diameter than the main bolt, this happens quickly.

So, you must put a wrench on the forward side of the bolt while simultaneously turning the nut on the rear side of the bolt. How to manage that by yourself is damn near impossible because the bolt head is accessed from the top and the nut is accessed from underneath.
