Using P/S pump pulley for valve adjustment question.

Notwithstanding my prior post regarding p/s pulley noise on 240d, is there any problem with using p/s pulley to rotate crank for valve adjustment? (My noise problem pre-existed recent valve job).

Important issue for me b/c my motor mounts are bad(low) such that there is no/very limited clearance at bottom of shroud to access crank bolt and using p/s pulley sure makes it easy.

Also, I have starter jumper switch. but didn't have recognizable electrical set up at fender (from searchs) for starter wires (the purple wire that the 300d'ers referenced in junction box on top of fender well. Although, there is a purplish wire connected to the starter in what appears to be unaccessable location for purposes of connecting jumper wire).

If p/s method OK, I guess jumper issue is moot. However, any help from the 240d'ers sure would help for next adjustment.

Thanks in advance.

Last week when I did my first valve adjustment I used the power steering pulley to turn the engine. Worked without fault and the belt never slipped. Don't forget to turn the engine slowly.

There is no reason why this wont work fine. Its a good way to simplify the job.

Works Like a Champ

Greetings,

I've used this method for the last three adjustments I've done, and as long as the pump belt is properly tight and the belt is in good repair, it seems to work with ease.

academic now that i do not have any valves to adjust, but, are you gentlemen talking about rotating the engine by putting a socket on the nut holding the power steering pulley? or rotating the pulley by hand - literally?

Greetings,

We're using the pulley nut on the p/s unit. Don't think you could turn the engine over by hand.

Thanks for responses.

Any ideas on staarter jumper wiring connection? This is perhaps academic at this point b/c p/s method sure is easy, but since I bought it and I am hardheaded, I sure would like to know how to hook it up properly on this car.

Thanks.

No easy way on the 240D

Greetings Carolina,

If you are wanting the connection for bump starting using a push button, then on your vehicle you'll have to go straight to the starter solenoid with one clip and the other to the battery power at the starter. No easy fender bypass for you. I don't recommend this method of moving the cam into position for valve adjustments as you will always over or undershoot the top of the cam lobe as well as wear your battery down for no reason. Either use the 27mm socket on the crankshaft bolt or use the power steering bolt to rotate the engine for valve adjustments.

Sounds like I'll have to save my starter jumper for the 300CD that I will hopefully buy one day then.

Thanks.
