1980 Mercedes 240D - $3400 (Louisville)

Powered by LeafletTerms

105 E. Hill (Hill Bend)

Restored vehicle. New paint, new tires, sunroof, A/C (retro-fitted to R-134 with new compressor and drier), and 4 speed automatic. Classic "123" body style. Completely rebuilt diesel engine, vacuum pump and fuel system (worth $5,000 alone) , excellent interior, power steering and brakes, many other new parts. Factory block heater installed, although I've never had to use it. This car still has all of it's original trim, moldings, light fixtures and owner's manual.
Even the O.E.M. first-aid kit has never been used. Understand, though, that this is a base model 4-door. No power seats or power windows. Even the sunroof is manually operated. Garage kept for most of it's life. Price is far less than amount invested. 502-635-2707 weekdays 9-5. Auto Research Inc., or 502-744-3780 anytime.

Having met with innumerable uninformed shoppers over the past months, I feel it necessary to state in advance a response to what many have called "reasonable questions and concerns".

First and foremost, NO, you did NOT find a "comparable car" on CL or any other medium for less. These cars
typically run for 300 to 500 thousand miles before requiring engine overhaul. Fuel distributors and injection
nozzles may last 250,000 miles without service. If that vehicle has ever been run dry on fuel (good luck
getting the truth on that issue), then the entire injection system may very well have been severely damaged.
If you've found one for less, it's probably because it is nearing the end of it's usable life. A similar model
with 280,000 miles is by NO means a comparable car.

Second, Yes, the oil is black. It's supposed to be. It's a Diesel.

Third, ANY Benz of this era can be expected to have collapsed jack ports and a rotted out floor pan. This
car has neither. There is minimal degradation of the body and chassis. I've used the factory jack on all
four ports and the car raises nicely.

Fourth, I stated that it was restored. I did not say it was a "concourse" restoration. It's a very attractive daily driver.
If your looking for a concourse restoration, then you'll need to spend $15,000 or more.

Fifth, I have no problem with a potential buyer bringing along an adviser who might be more familiar with these
cars than you are. Please don't jump to the conclusion he or she is more familiar with these cars than I am.

Sixth, It's a 1980 240D. It doesn't do the quarter mile in 7 seconds. These cars are somewhat sluggish
and lazy on take-off. They're designed for highway economy. It's NOT a getaway car. If you're looking
for sports-car performance, this is NOT the car for you.

Finally, I've had a number of people come by, parsing the car to pieces in hopes of finding some insignificant flaw
to justify my reducing the price by 2 or 3 thousand dollars. Get real. It's a 33 year old car.
What you're buying here is a $5,000+ engine and fuel system. At no extra charge, I'm throwing in an
attractive, air-conditioned drive-home package which was built by Mercedes-Benz in 1980. It has nominal
rust and decay, none visible, and will probably last as such for years to come while delivering 25+ MPG,
and actually starting reliably every morning. All for about .60 cents on the dollar. I've got months of work,
years of storage and decades of experience invested. Call me crazy, but I'm not going to give that away. 105 E. Hill (Hill Bend) (google map) (yahoo map)

Hi Gringo
No anti airbag sentiment at all. Well I take that back. I have owned two Lincolns both suffered from leaking air bags. In 40 years of driving I have never had a steel spring break yet.

The last one isn't too outrageous, IF the mileage is accurate. But it's an automatic. Dealers think every car is worth more with an automatic!

Happy Motoring, Mark

EBay turd for yeah....granted it has a some what cheap opening bid but.....

Okay, I'm going to be as painfully honest as possible, in regards to both the GOOD and BAD with this vehicle. It's a vehicle that has served me well during the time that I have owned it, but it IS an old car, with many quirks, and I don't want someone feeling they've been "surprised" by anything about this car.

Generally, this car has been my "daily driver" for a year and a half. I've driven it back and forth from St. Augustine to Jacksonville (40+ miles), 5 days a week, and to and from Tampa and Ocala on multiple occasions as well. This car is extremely dependable, and if that is what you are looking for, for a price like this, then it can't be beat. If you've ever owned a Mercedes Diesel, then you will be familiar with their dependability...as well as their quirks.

THE GOOD:

* This car is the most dependable "starter" I've ever experienced in an old car. It starts EVERY TIME, with no need to press down the gas pedal or anything. Old cars like this, especially old diesels, often require a lot of "pedal-pumping" to get started. (This is my 4th Mercedes Diesel.) Not this one. You can reach in from the window, crank it up, and you're good.

* It has 4 new tires. They have all been replaced over the last 12 months.

* The "Standard" Mercedes Diesel good points: Very smooth ride; Very efficient (24-30mpg) for a big car like this; etc.

* New CD/MP3 player with USB port and auxiliary jack.

* New fuel filters, including the one that is inside the fuel tank.

* New key/tumbler/thingie. (Old one was worn out and wouldn't turn.)

THE BAD:

* There's a vacuum lock issue, but it's easily worked around. The car will not shut off when you turn the key off...UNLESS the driver's side door is locked! (It sounds strange, but it's due to a quirk in the vacuum system.)

* It makes a lot of smoke, but I'm fairly certain it's just from being an old diesel.

* The engine shakes a lot. It kept shaking the air filter off, so I bungee-corded it, so it won't move. (Hey, I did that over a year, and about 20k miles ago, and it seems to have worked fine! Don't judge me! LOL.)

* The "Standard" Mercedes Diesel bad points: VERY slow acceleration; Loud; Smoky; The 1st-to-2nd gear "clunk" common in Mercedes Diesels; The A/C probably hasn't worked in over a decade; etc.

* It has a peculiar problem where it will get stuck in gear and refuse to upshift. When this happens, you have to turn the car off, then turn it on again, and it will shift fine. I haven't felt like sinking the money into having someone figure out why it does this, and I've gotten pretty good at doing this "on the fly." (You shift to Neutral, turn it off, turn it on, then put it back in Drive...)

* Little Things: Rear passenger window won't go down; Glove box won't open without "work"; You have to hold hood release while pulling on front release simultaneously to open hood;

THE UGLY:

* There are a lot of body issues. When I bought it, the entire driver's side was practically rusted away, due to being a car from Chicago that had been sitting on the street during many snowfalls. (The snow plows would push the salty snow up against the driver's side...which is why it's only really on that side.) I attempted to fix it with Bondo, but never had the time to finish the job...so it's not exactly "pretty". (See pictures.) * The interior is dirty and beaten up. It wasn't in good shape when I got it, and my three little girls have added to the desolation. (Again, see pictures.)

CONCLUSION:

Essentially, it's a very dependable, if slow, vehicle for daily driving, or for parts/etc., if that's your aim. It will probably drive to Alaska if that's where you need to take it. If I've left anything out, I'll edit the listing, and if you have any questions, I'll answer them. Thanks!

Oh my Lord... I do not know where to start on this one...

Modified 1987 Mercedes Benz 300TD Wagon

"This "murdered out" (flat black custom paint with smoked lights) and fully tricked out 1987 Mercedes 300 TD Wagon with a newly rebuilt engine w/120,000 miles is the ultimate vintage wagon. In other words, this ride turns heads. The car can run as a "frybrid" on 75/25 Waste Veg Oil to diesel (55 gal "service station" included) or just as a very high mpg diesel.

The interior and exterior are spotless, and the Alpine system is Bluetooth connected and iPhone charge/connected. There is a very roomy back section with jump seats which fold down for pure storage. As you can see below, virtually everthing on the car has been rebuilt or replaced and is brand-spanking new. I'm also including towers and a heavy duty Thule cargo basket, and a $1300 Greasecar dual tank conversion kit should you decide to convert to full WVO. This car has over $18,000 invested in it, as well as a lot of love and hard work. Asking only$ 9900!! Call 614-284-3715 with any inquiries.

Features:
- Alpine sound system with Bluetooth connectivity
- Sunroof
- Power windows/locks
- Flat black paint job
- Tinted windows and darkened tail lights
- Replaced engine with lower milage engine (120,000 miles)
- Rebuilt injection pump
- New front struts and shocks
- Rear hydraulic accumulators replaced
- New radiator
- New tires, breaks and battery"

- - - - - -

I am not sure if it the price, the ugly blackout or the WVO conversion that makes me want to puke...

No it was at his grandfathers house, all the Granddad knew was how to start it
and to explain that the install of the air bags was incorrect on the pass rear and that it was a leaker. needless to say it was an experience.

Sixto's wagon... hm, not a bad color combo. I think that 60% of the asking price is because of the license plate. Take a look at it: "87300TD", in California. Many people would KILL for that!
