Pretty cool, I like the color too. Its still amazes me that people don't know Mercedes are taxis and service vehicles back in there native lands...and that they aren't all luxurious like the newer generations.

People are far too used to the ridiculous amount of gadgets and needless junk on most modern cars...simplicity is the way to be.
My cars still boggle the minds of my coworkers....no one understands.

Simple elegance, a term that seems to be incomprehensible or negative in todays market.

Even higher end models like the W126 can be considered spartan in accessories and options compared to the modern cars....I went to the auto show last week and the gadget level on most cars is out of control. Its no wonder people constantly crash from not paying attention. When in a car you should be DRIVING.

Love the story
In the article it gives the impression that her car was not ordered with AC but if you look at the pictures that are provided with the link there appears to be an AC compressor in the engine pic. I would assume it is an aftermarket install? Doesn't look like the oem compressor. Just asking.

I'm reminded of my father-in-law's frustration with all of the gadgets on a new Lexus. "I just want to drive."
I offered him the keys to my 78 Datsun Z. Definitely not as safe or comfortable as the SD but fun to drive.

Many years ago, I acquired a '60 Mercedes 220S Fintail from the widow of the original owner. They bought the car new in Italy. The only 'options' the car had were the white steering-wheel, Locking gas-cap, leather interior with separate center cushion to convert the front buckets to a bench-seat and a power-brake servo.
Otherwise, manual-shift, manual-steering and manual-windows. Not even a radio - the widow told me that back then they thought it was too frivolous! One time I gave a friend's kid a ride to the Metro. He asked me why I kept moving the lever on the steering column. I told him "That's the gear-shift" He said "No way!" Today, I drive a couple w123s - a 240D and a Euro 300TD. Both have stereo-radios, alloy-wheels, power-steering and manual heat-AC. The 240D evan has power windows. But they're both stick-shift (5-speed in the TD) The only way I'd want them. Happy Motoring, Mark

And the glittering faceplate and flickering display reminds me of 'Vegas at Midnite"! I'm replacing it with a simple '80s Becker Europa. Many critics are saying that the intergrated touch-screen audio, climate and navigation systems, now mandatory in some new cars, may be more dangerous than cell-phone texting! Happy Motoring, Mark
