Looking new project...300TD or 300CD or 300SD
SO I have not had a MB Diesel for longer than I can remember not having one.
I am wanting to do a manual conversion car. I have found three local canidates... 1979 300SD- Complete Gray with Blue MB Tex Junk Yard find...wet carpet 1981 300TD- Minus Transmission Cream with Tan MB Tex Parts Car only missing the transmission and broken windshield 1983 300CD- General "it needs work" Gold with Brown MB Tex "My daughter drove it here and left it" All have a little rust...all need interior this or thats All in about the same "project" shape...all can be brought for scrap value. Around $400-$500. All have titles. I have not owned a CD or older SD I really liked my Wagon. Thanks !!! |
To properly differentiate here we really need prices, picture would also be extremely helpful. For a project\manual conversion\fun car for me it would be between the CD and the SD. I do Love how w116 look with euro bumpers.... But Coupes are more sporty....

1981 Mercedes 300TD, hands down. Excellent drivetrain, but remember you will have to swap in your speedo for a mechanical one, as the '81 model is the only year that has an electric, W126-style speedo.
Happy motoring! :) |
I've got an 84 300D with a 4 speed already installed, pilot bushing, new clutch and pressure plate, all it needs is the driveshaft, pedals and shifter installed... little rust, broken driver's side hood hinge, and it's got euro blue cloth seats...
only about 200 miles from you... funny thing is, I picked it up in wilmington... towed it here... small world. |

If you are ever up in the northeast I have a project car in CT, 1982 300SD where the transmission blew. Was my DD up until then, great shape with minimal rust but I live in Philly now so it's sitting there and got to go. I realize you're looking in NC but let me know if you're interested. Its the white car in my sig.

I like the CD's but the coupe only parts are pricey and finding them at the junk yard is RARE ( around here anyway). Really depends what your gonna use it for... the sd is a good highway car, the TD is great for hauling things in. Coupes are nice if you don't need the rear seat for passengers. Is a turbo a big deal for you? The 1980 CD I just picked up others turned down because it is not turbo... Not sure that would be a factor in any of the cars you listed tho.
