w126....anyone make their own acc. pedal?
So after getting tired of replacing the crappy pedal that keeps breaking, I decided to make my own. Took a little bit of cutting/welding/toss it do it again, but I like the final outcome. I have to finish it all up, but I'll take a pic of it tomorrow. All metal, and the detent switch works perfectly now:cool: Anyone else do this, because the pedal design is horrible.....:)

Hmm.
I've got to wonder why yours kept breaking... none of my cars had any problems with the original design... I do agree it's a weak design, all plastic, tabbed into the floor like that, but it seems to work for most. waiting on pics. |
Im waiting for the day mine fails. Plastic can only be bent back and forth so much. Like vstech though, mine appears to be factory and holding up fine.

i've had two fail within a few years, and i've been just going without for over a year now. i have to agree...lame design.

Mine failed and I repaired/replaced it with 2 gate hinges I welded together. it worked great. but when the car idled with out my foot touching the peddle the hinges "jingled" I eventually replaced it with a replacement pedal. but I drove with the gate hinges for about 5 years.

I've replaced two on two different cars in 10+ years. There's got to be something else wrong making it fail. I've never touched it on my 300SD and I've driven it over 113,000 miles on the pedal that was in it when I got it....
Replaced it on my wife's 300E about 3.5 years ago, no issues since. The key here is that I have a spare on the shelf, and everyone knows having a spare of a part wards off failure. :D Its worked great for me so far with the amount of spare parts I have! |
Wish I had some better pics but the pedal is still in its "design" stage. You can get the gist of what I'm going after. The flat piece will get a slip on pedal piece that is found on any old vw. And I'm using the no gas mig, which explains the beautiful welds:). I'm on test trial three now.....Trying to find the best length for the detent. Then we make the pretty one.

That is too much work. No sense rigging what works most of the time. Mine broke once and I picked up a couple at the yard for free. Get a couple of the blocks that trip the door latch while you're at it.

Ive had mine break twice now but I don't see it as a big issue. I attribute it to driving style-mashing the pedal vs grandma style. It was only $9 from the dealer anyway

Replaced once on my '83 300SD between 93K and 305K mile mark.
Don't recall at what mileage since I put the miles on in 8 years - it was a blur I was driving it so much. Bought new one from MB dealer, after having to use the metal rod hanging down because it broke during a road trip to East Tennessee/Georgia/Alabama. The metal ball/rod was not comfortable using as the foot feed. |
