What to do with a 1985 2.2 190d with no trans
I just picked up a 1985 190d with 4 cylinder and 230000 miles. Engine good but trans is busted and in the trunk. Its body is pretty typical for a 190. Broken switches and all. But seats comfy , not rusty underneath and it could make a good beater. gold colored. I wish I had pics.
I paid 300.00 for it and am wondering what to do with this cool 4 cylinder. Tranny is out and its just ready to go. I'm thinking I need a 5 speed tranny to go with it. But I don't really want to drive a 190d that much seeing as I have my 87 wagon. I'd really like to get a 5 speed and put this engine and 5 speed in my 87 td wagon. Is that doable? Better yet Anyone have a wagon with a blown motor? I bet I could get a newer gasser wagon and convert as I have the diesel stuff on my parts wagon. That the ticket maybe. Anyone want to buy a 87 Tdt Also I would pass this on to a member if it's what someone needs for their project. I cant do anything with it for at least 6 months Also I thought maybe mounting a generator head to it. Man I really like the idea of a 4 cylinder 5 speed w124 wagon. What would you do with it?

have you driven the 87TD? with the 145HP turbo 6cylinder, it's not exactly a speed demon. oh, it'll move sure, but it's a HEAVY beast.
put a what, 90 HP 4 cylinder in there? the 5 speed would certainly lighten the car a hundred or so pounds, but still waaay underpowered I'd think. you'd need to put in a 4.10 diff to get the car moving. the stock 2.65 would MELT any clutch you try... top speed likely would be around 50 I'd guess... it's just my opinion though. build it. let's see what it does.

We have a 4spd in our euro 87 190d- and it's just fine. I don't know what rear end we have, but I have dreamed about a higher gear for highway speeds.

The 2.2 in the '85 is enough motor for the 190's weight of apx 2,600 pounds. I would be very surprised if you were pleased repowering something larger like a 124 wagon but definately use the 5-speed if you try. The 2.2 doesn't seam to mind the higher RPM's and is slugish below 2500 rpms. You might pick a differential mated to the OD in the manual tranny that has you reving around 3500 rpm at 70 mph. I'd think you'd really have keep the rpms up through each gear though.
Good luck whichever way you go!

1895 4 cylinder is a 72 hp motor. 190D came in around 2645 lbs. Mine has a 3.43 rear end gear.

... the roughly 2700 lb W201 chassis with the 3.5ish rear gear will be a slow, but drivable and fun vehicle behind the 601NA... put that in a 3900ish pound wagon, with a 2.65 rear gear, and I sincerely doubt you will achieve city traffic speeds... unless your travels are all downhill, and you NEVER put anything in the cargo area... use 201 light wheels, and SKINNY tires, NEVER fill the tank above 1/2 (around 8 gallons) and remove all but the driver's seat...

Years ago I transfered a six cylinder engine from a lighter vehicle to a much heavier one. The additional loading seemed to start it burning oil in a very short time. May have just been coincidence.
Still the engine was from my fathers car and it was low milage as he had purchased the car new. About 50k on it at the time of transplant if I remember. As stated it may have just been coincidence but I still would not do it again just in case it was the changed loading pattern that did it. It went into a much heavier vehicle. |

Interested in an automatic trans? If so, I have one. Currently in a running 85 190d. PM me for details.

We already have an example of what happens when you put a low power diesel in a heavy vehicle- the 240D w123. Turns out its just slower than hell but a 240 usually runs out of gears at 75-80mph

My 190d has a 3.07 rear (converted gasser) a bit slow off the line. But it does ok. Its an auto too....all 73 horses get a complete workout every time I use it.

I had a 190D 2.2 with a 5 speed, and I can't imagine that engine/trans combo in ANY 124, let alone a wagon. That would be like driving around 3 of your biggest buddies in your 240D with an automatic. Not something I would want to do. A 2.5 turbo with a 5 speed in a 124 wagon, now that's a different story!

Oh I dunno, I bet they sold that engine in that wagon in other markets. with the right gears i am certain it would cruise at 70 mph at least. Getting it up to speed would not be the fastest thing but so what? He'd be doing it for his own reasons.
But before I did that I would put the stick into the wagon and tall gears and with the right gearing he would match the fuel economy with the six or come close to what it would do with the four.

I filled my 240d with 3 buddies and a dog and it didn't seem like that much of a difference. but then again 240 drivers have a different mentality.

I knew I'd get a lot of nice feedback here. Thanks. My wagon now seems way over powered It is a rocket. I have Alda off. It is nice for towing cars. But I dont need that as I have a truck. They sold w124 with a 4 cylinder. Mercedes-Benz W124 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. It be slow and I'd climb hills at 45 mph but I bet it would cruse at 70 or 75 fine. My old 79 Vw westfalia had a 4 cylinder and 4 speed tranny and we cruised across the country over the Rockies in it. It was about 70 hp too.
But I like the idea of bolting the transmission in with the six cylinder. Plus saves a lot of work. (i think) I found a local 190d with 5 speed an no motor and I'm getting the whole car. I guess I have my summer project. I still like idea of getting a newer gasser w124 wagon transplanting it. But my time is limited. B
