Easiest glow plug failure I've ever diagnosed.

It was so loose that it simply pulled apart with a gentle tug on the wire. Never seen that before so I thought I'd share.

My starting performance has been greatly improved but it's still not starting quite as well as it did 45,000 miles ago. Any thoughts? I adjusted the valves 5000 miles ago but I think I inadvertently went too loose.

Eeeepppp don't use monarks.....there are some horror stories about them....

There is a lot if carbon on the plugs. I would ream the holes, I would always think the engine is due for injectors. I would consider doing a diesel purge. I would also change filters, and I would change the primer pump if it hasn't been done already. A new starter can also help with starting. Oil change with synthetic will also help clean the engine. If the engine has a lot of carbon build up and the valves were tight....you may have to adjust them again...and floor it, rev it up and it will help remove carbon

Someone might have cranked down on the nut tightening the wire and started the internal damage.

You can make a GP Reramer out of it if you don`t have one. pull ther guts out of it and the tip. get an appropriate size drill bit and weld the end. there is a write up and pictures of one some where.

Edit:

OK, I found it.

Yeah I reamed and brushed the holes out. Not much came out, but they were reamed 45,000 miles ago. Car has 245,000 miles on it. Didn't know of problems with Monark plugs. Guess I'm gonna run em since I've got them in already. When they go to **** I'll replace them again. Not exactly a tough job. The filters have 5k on them, I usually get 15k out of them. It started smoking more after I did the valve adjustment. It was running so well I didn't touch it for 40,000 miles, it was my first time and I really just think I'm too loose as I adjusted with the lobes straight up instead of 180 degrees out from the followers.

I've read that the monark plugs swell up and that the tips break off. I thought they were good like their nozzles, so I was going to spend the extra $$ but then I did some research....not so good....do you may not want to keep them in to long.

If the car is smoking and has 245k.....and its smoking.....I can pretty much guess you can use new injectors, they probably aren't spraying correctly...

I always read that it is the AC Plugs that are the ones that swell and tips break off.

Havent seen the NGK Plugs over here for the MB`s. not saying they don`t exist.
I use the NGK`s in my Datsun Diesel PU for the past 31 years w/o problems.

Don`t offer them here. sell them on E-Bay and list them as the million mile plug.

I imagine if a tip breaks off I'll be in pretty deep poop, eh? Are we talking trashed pistons here? Damn, I really thought since all the talk about Monark injectors that their glowplugs would have been of similar quality/standing.

Anyway, maybe my injectors are a bit tired, but the change was pretty dramatic at the time of valve adjustment and I've been able to verify I screwed it up and went way too loose as a result of my methodology, so I'm betting that's it more than anything else in regards to my starting performance. Prior to the adjustment, I had started it @ -5F, no block heater. It cranked slow at that temp but took less than 10 seconds of cranking to catch and run on it's own. Today I'm getting that same performance @ 15F.

I think the one big plus to the loop style plugs is how easy they often are to diagnose. Which one do you think failed?

This is a picture form dieselgiant. My #5 failed exactly the same way, leading to a swap to pencil. That one benefit isn't quite enough to warrant keeping them!
