Diesel Fuel Thermostat

I had a leaking fuel thermostat on my 87 300Dt. This was a sort of education for me because I didn't know this thing existed until the leak. Getting into the thing, the fuel lines were changed somewhere along the way so that the fuel from the tank was connected directly to the fuel pump bypassing the thermostat. The inlet to the thermostat was then connected to the outlet that normally goes to the fuel pump. The 2 lines to the the heat exchanger were connected as normal. Not knowing why this change was done- I'm somewhat inclined to leave it as is after installing the repair kit. I live in the high desert, so cold is not such a problem. Is this a case of over-engineering as this is not used on my 81 240D? Or maybe they didn't have the seal and washer handy- the washer was kaput. Would appreciate any thoughts.

Typical Amerikaner Wrench's response

To a Bad O-Ring on the Fuel Thermostat...Bypass It! [Lazy,Lazy,Lazy]
They've (Whomever was in charge of "Hacks" for your chassis) simply
"Looped" the Ingress to the Egress on the Bypassed FT.

If You've installed a New O-ring on the FT (And the H.E.'s O.K.) you
can now use the FT as it was designed.

Mine's disabled
(And in this clime,it'll NEVER make a difference...
Two Weeks around 33 F,TOTAL all winter long)

On my 601 I removed it and just let the fuel through through the heater circuit all the time....has made no difference...

Diesel Fuel Thermostat

To correct my previous post, the fuel thermostat was obviously not leaking as it was not connected to the fuel supply. But I do have a leak somewhere. One of the return lines on the injector was wet. Replaced it- still have a leak. Next step will be to replace all the return lines. Hope its not the IP
