240D Intake Flap Necessity
I am in the middle of a 4speed swap for a member on his 7/82, 82 240D.
It was an auto and is getting the 4speed setup out of a euro 82 240. The 83 has the intake flap, but the euro 82 does not, and the manual transmission throttle linkage does not have a ballstud to even modify a linkage rod to open the flap. Can I undo the 2 screws that hold the flap to the rod in the intake, remove the butteryfly flap, and just leave the center rod in the intake? I'm planning to leave the rod because if I totally remove it I will have two holes in the intake after the filter and I would think on a 240D the bare rod isn't going to represent a huge intake restriction. I've read the flap was for idle quality? I've unplugged the EGR on this motor, and the euro cars didn't have flaps, so is it really that necessary?

Paul, I'm pretty sure the '82 is the auto, the '83 the euro manual. You seem to have gotten them mixed up.

Yes I did.
The motor in the pic is the 82 auto motor.

Or you could swap the non egr intake of the euro!

The flap was there to improve the EGR function. It created a partial vacuum in the intake manifold, so that more exhaust fumes would be sucked into the intake manifold. If you have disabled the EGR valve, the flap in the intake is useless.

The euro intake has different runner lengths and takes a different airbox. The US intake has a really nice condition airbox on it so I'd rather keep his original intake, and the airbox on the euro car has some rust and other damage.
