1981 Mercedes 240D Weatherstripping question
I was wondering if anyone has had experiencing replacing these parts? The weatherstripping on all of my doors is bad.
Dealership is $250/piece from Germany Rock Auto is $30-40/piece... Has anyone had experience ordering this part non-OEM? Please help asap! I would like to make an order today. |
wetherstriping, or door seals
yes I have installed non oem seals . ordered through Pelican parts or peach parts they work perfect, the key is to take your time and order new fasteners and use a little yellow 3M glue at four key points, the really flat areas, take your time and push the seal all the way into its groove make sure you use the metal plate with new fasteners and glue seal across the bottom of the door in it groove. seals just right. good luck.

I use some after market door seals I got off E-bay a few years ago, the doors leak water like I had the windows open going through a car wash. an exciting experience.
The majority of all after mkt seals etc... now seem to be CRP, URO and a few others that are all from china. Looks like looking in the Forum Parts Catalog, fronts $149 and rears $137 each from MB. 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D Sedan - Bumpers, Doors, Latches & Lids - Page 1 I all depends how long you decide to keep the car. is this just a short time owner relationship just to keep it going, or a long time one? I found that using some Solicone spray helped to get the seal in the groove around the door. Charlie |
Before I install them I always use some POR-15 on the bottom (of the door) groove. Water collets there and rusts them out (sometimes pretty badly). Removing the rust scale and putting a coat of protective paint on top helps to get them in place and allows them to slide a bit more easily into the final position.

You pays your money you takes your chances. For the price difference, I would try the cheap aftermarket - or, ff you have a pick and pull anywhere near, you could give that a shot. I have pulled absolutely pristine OEM door rubber off two junked cars.
I have installed aftermarket seals on two cars and had some issues as Charlie described, with water entering after (only in a car wash or from a pressure gun). It took a couple of tries to adjust the fit, but I was able to correct the problem by kneading the strip back and forth to change the fit, on a nice hot sunny day. For me the trouble spot was always at the leading edge of the door frame at the top curve downwards. Mind what Zeke says. Even if you are in a relatively dry state and you think your car is pretty rot free, you may get a surprise when you peel away the seal where it runs along the bottom of the door. My wagon lived in OK/TX for almost all of its life, and it's rotten along the channel for the strip. |
Second question.
Is there any differenace in frame sizes and weatherstripping etc from the Mercedes 240D to the 300D. I know the engines/transmissions are completely different, but are they the same frame? As seen here the 300D prices are much cheaper then the 240D. $45 for OEM. 300D http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/3305/MBZ_3305_BDYBMP_pg1.htm#item3 $45 a piece 240D http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/3202/MBZ_3202_BDYSEL_pg1.htm#item2 $150 a piece :( |
the chasses are the same. there was an ostensible difference in the first year of production.
i keep leaning towards buying the $325 seven-piece set of seals from turkey (w114selo on eBay) but i have been too chicken to pull the trigger. |
Thanks for the quick reply!! So I can buy the $45 one for the 84 300D and it will fit my 1981 240D?

I see the posts. My only confusion is that the W123 300D OEM is $45.25
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/3305/MBZ_3305_BDYBMP_pg1.htm#item3 Yet the 240D OEM is $149.25, yet the 240D and 300D are the same frame exactly? Can someone please confirm the 300d and 240D use the exact same frame diameters and therefor the same weatherstripping. In that case I will just buy the 300D OEM weatherstripping. Thanks in advance for your time. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/SuperCat/3202/MBZ_3202_BDYSEL_pg1.htm#item2 |
Whunter tried to steer you in the right direction. You are getting door moulding and door seals confused. On that 300D catalog page that you linked, scroll down a bit and you will see the door seal, which is the same price as for the 240d.

I think the door molding you keep refrerencing to, I think it is the horizonal rubber piece on the out side. might be called a window wipe?
