Alternate Diesel/ powertrain swaps.

If you could put a Mercedes diesel powerplant into something, what would the combination be.

For example:
- Mercedes 606 turbo into a 2010 JEEP Grand Cherokee.
- Mercedes 617 turbo into a 1993 Toyota 4-Runner.

(other swaps of any manufacturer could be welcome to add to the entertainment value of the thread.), as well as info/pics regarding actual examples.
-actual swap projects underway in any form as well as completed projects welcome for sure.

Go..

I'm on the 12-year plan for my Jeep build.

So far I have a frame, stock axles, 617 w/VNT/methanol, a tub, SM465, bellhousing/flywheel, NP205 transfer case. Still need an adapter plate, driveshafts, wheels, seats, etc.

A nice DD would be a turbo 605 in a 2wd ranger/tacoma/s10. Would be a nice get around car.

.....and first out of the gate we have Simpler is Better.....leaving no room for dreamers, he is actually working on a cool swap project himself, and Better yet, has already started towards his plan.

I saw a smaller style jeep, (1980's) with an ISUZU diesel swapped into it this past summer. Saw the guy in the parking lot of local Canadian Tire. I drove up in the wagon and talked a bit. He claimed to have driven from the far west coast to that point on just WVO picked up along the way. He was working underneath the jeep in his bare feet in this parking lot, which was amazing since it was hot that week for asphalt and bare feet. Thought he needed tools or parts but he was well equipt and had alot of stuff cramed into/on top of the little jeep. He showed me a centrifugal filter of some kind as well as some of his set-up....saw some pex tubing and fittings being used as fuel line, I thought it was "mad max" type of ride....cool

You say swaps underway are ok, but if it's a completed project does that count - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/308791-380sl-diesel-conversion-project.html

macdoe 02-25-2013 05:16 PM

yes, by all means
I just read that thread for a bit and saw it was 11 pages, looks like it is all a person would want to encounter regarding a swap thread. That will keep me busy reading awhile. Really GREAT pictures. How do you like the car?

One of my favorites. Nothing quite like a coupe diesel :)

I'm getting ready to put a 617 into a 1966 Ford F100. Picked up the motor about a week ago. hopefully I can pick up the new front suspension from a Crown Vic this week, and start tearing it apart.

I have to rebuild the auto trans, and figure out what I'm going to do about the trans linkage and drive shaft. Still need to find oil and trans coolers, but everything else should be fairly straight forward.

The 617 is almost the same size as the 6 cylinder coming out.

I want to put a 617 into a pre 1975 truck. 2 wheel drive. Something to get good mileage and able to haul parts home and trash to the dump.

holy snikeys I have the same truck, well it's a 65 short bed and have an 85 617 I want to drop in. Where are you located?

TheDon 02-25-2013 06:50 PM

I'd like to put my 606 in something like an extended cab ranger. But instead its going into my 300D. I'd love to stick it in an E320 Cabriolet. I can do whatever I want with it really because its mine and I scored it for cheaaaaaapppp!!!!

Daw, I really want your truck

billva 02-25-2013 07:22 PM

neumann, I live in southern Va. My son's a Mercedes tech, so he kind of talked me into it.

Silber Adler 02-25-2013 07:32 PM

Id like something more powerful in my 300D. Maybe a 4Bt Cummings.
